ISO 9692-1:2013 specifies types of joint preparation for metal arc welding with covered electrode, gas-shielded metal arc welding, gas welding, TIG welding, and beam welding of steel. It applies to joint preparation for full penetration butt welds and for fillet welds. For partial penetration butt welds, types of joint preparation and dimensions differing from those specified in ISO 9692-1:2013 may be stipulated. The root gaps referred to in ISO 9692-1:2013 are those gaps presented after tack welding, if used. Consideration is given to altering the joint preparation details (where appropriate) to facilitate temporary backing, "one-sided welding," etc.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9692-1:2013 - "Welding and allied processes - Types of joint preparation - Part 1" specifies recommended types of joint preparation and associated dimension ranges for welding steels. It covers joint forms and parameters for common welding processes including manual metal arc, gas-shielded metal arc (MIG/MAG), gas (oxyfuel) welding, TIG (GTAW) and beam welding (laser and electron beam). The standard addresses full-penetration butt welds and fillet welds and provides guidance to facilitate practices such as temporary backing and one‑sided welding.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Joint preparations are intended for all kinds of steel and for welding processes listed in the document. For partial‑penetration butt welds, alternative preparations and dimensions may be stipulated.
- Joint types and dimensions: Recommended joint forms and dimension ranges are given in Tables 1–4 for butt welds (one‑ and both‑sides) and fillet welds (one‑ and both‑sides). These dimension ranges are design limits, not manufacturing tolerances.
- Root gap definition: Root gaps are defined as the gaps present after tack welding (if tack welding is used).
- Finish and edge condition: Longitudinal edges of the root face should be de‑burred; chamfering up to 2 mm is permitted.
- Process references: Welding process references follow ISO 4063 nomenclature; positions follow ISO 6947.
- Adaptability: Joint preparation details may be altered where appropriate to facilitate backing, one‑sided welding, centering features, etc.
- Limitations: Manufacturing limits depend on welding process, parent metal, welding position and required quality level. Specific industries (e.g., pipeline) may use selected ranges from this basic part.
Practical applications and who uses ISO 9692-1
- Welding engineers and fabricators - to select joint types and preliminary dimensions when preparing steel assemblies for MIG/MAG, TIG, MMA, gas or beam welding.
- Welding procedure developers (WPS) - to define joint geometry and root gap conditions in procedure specifications.
- Designers and detailers - to indicate standard joint preparations on fabrication drawings.
- Quality inspectors and NDT personnel - to assess whether joint preparation conforms to recommended design limits before welding.
- Training organizations and procurement teams - to align training materials and procurement specifications with recognized international practice.
