ISO 9774:2004 gives guidelines to the standards writer in selecting thermal-insulation material properties for standards used in building applications. These guidelines are not intended to prove the suitability of any particular product for any given application. The standard applies only to prefabricated thermal-insulation products, i.e. manufactured mats and boards including any facings or coverings which may be present, although the basic characteristics may also be applied to other insulation products, e.g. in situ in systems or components, where appropriate. The standard covers only thermal-insulation products for use in buildings within normal climatic conditions. It does not cover insulation products for building services, e.g. plumbing and heating, nor insulation products for industrial use. Acoustic properties are not included in the properties given in the standard, although these may be additionally required for some fields of application.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9774:2004 - Thermal insulation for building applications - provides guidelines for selecting thermal‑insulation material properties when drafting standards and specifications for building use. It focuses on prefabricated thermal‑insulation products (mats and boards, including facings) used in buildings under normal climatic conditions. The document helps standards writers translate service performance needs into product requirements and appropriate test methods. It does not prove suitability of specific products, cover acoustic properties, building‑services insulation (e.g., plumbing/heating), or industrial insulation.
Key topics
- Scope and application: applies to prefabricated insulation for roofs, walls, ceilings and foundations; can inform other products or in‑situ systems where appropriate. Excludes building services and industrial uses.
- Performance characteristics: lists properties to consider by application, including:
- Thermal resistance (R) and thermal conductivity (λ) (design values to be stated at 10 °C or 23 °C; 40 °C for tropical areas)
- Service temperature ranges (normal and elevated)
- Dimensional stability under shape, temperature and humidity
- Mechanical behaviour: compression, bending, shear, flexural and lateral tensile strength (e.g., wind loads)
- Moisture performance: short‑ and long‑term wetting, water vapour transmission, permeability to air, freeze/thaw resistance
- Durability: behaviour under biological attack, ageing, compatibility with other materials
- Safety: fire behaviour and health/safety influences
- Application mapping: tables and sketches map which properties are relevant for common building applications (flat/pitched roofs, cavity walls, foundation insulation, etc.).
- Specification guidance: recommends translating performance characteristics into specified values and test methods, accounting for predictable changes from ageing and moisture (see normative reference ISO/TR 9165).
Applications and users
ISO 9774 is practical for:
- Standards authors developing product standards or national specifications
- Manufacturers of prefabricated insulation (mats, boards, facings) for product classification and compliance
- Test laboratories and certification bodies establishing test protocols and acceptance criteria
- Architects, specifiers and building engineers selecting insulation products by application (roofs, walls, floors, foundations)
- Regulators and code committees aligning product requirements with expected in‑service performance
Practical benefit: use ISO 9774 to ensure insulation product requirements reflect real service conditions (temperature, moisture, loading) and to define clear testable criteria for market acceptance.
