The method specified applies to organic compounds which are soluble, non-volatile (or which have a neglible vapour pressure), not lost by foaming from the test solution, not significantly adsorbable on glass and activated sludge, not inhibitory to the test microorganisms. Its principle is comparison with the comparison of dissolved organic carbon in the effluent from a control unit. Annex A gives examples of results of the test on various compounds, Annex B typical control values.

ISO 9887:1992 specifies the Semi-Continuous Activated Sludge (SCAS) method for evaluating the aerobic biodegradability of organic compounds in an aqueous medium. The procedure measures residual dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the effluent of an activated sludge unit dosed daily with a test compound and compares it with a control unit receiving sewage only. The method is intended to assess ultimate or primary biodegradation under controlled laboratory conditions and is widely used for water quality and biodegradation testing.
