Covers class III requirements for centrifugal pumps of single stage, multistage, horizontal or vertical construction (coupled or close-coupled) with any drive and any installation for general application. Includes design features concerned with installation, maintenance and safety of such pumps including baseplate, coupling and auxiliary piping but excluding the driver, if it is not an integral part of the pump.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9908:1993 - Technical specifications for centrifugal pumps - Class III defines the Class III (least severe) requirements for general-purpose centrifugal pumps. It applies to single- and multistage, horizontal or vertical pumps, coupled or close‑coupled, with any drive and installation - excluding the driver when it is not an integral part of the pump. The standard covers design features that affect installation, maintenance and safety, including baseplate, coupling and auxiliary piping. Annexes include a pump data sheet, enquiry/purchase guidance and examples of seal and piping arrangements.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & classification: Class III in a three‑class system (ISO 9905 = Class I; ISO 5199 = Class II). Selection of class is by purchaser/manufacturer agreement.
- Performance & NPSH: NPSHR is based on cold water per ISO 2548 / ISO 3555; NPSHA must exceed NPSHR by at least 0.5 m.
- Characteristic curve & rated conditions: The pump characteristic curve must indicate allowable operating range and rated (guarantee) point.
- Pressure‑temperature rating: Basic design pressure is at least 6 bar at 20 °C for common materials (cast iron, ductile iron, carbon or stainless steel), adjusted where material properties require.
- Mechanical design: Requirements for casing thickness, gaskets, external bolting, flanges (compatible with ISO 7005 series) and provisions for dismantling without disturbing pipe connections where practicable.
- Rotordynamics & vibration: First lateral critical speed must be at least 10% above maximum allowable continuous speed; unfiltered vibration limits and measurement locations are specified (shop-test basis).
- Shafts, seals and bearings: Limits for shaft deflection/runout, seal cavity dimensions per ISO 3069, option for mechanical seals or packing, and bearing life (basic rating life) ≥ 10 000 h.
- Documentation & testing: Includes shop inspection, hydrostatic testing, preparation for dispatch and a standard data sheet (Annex A).
Applications
ISO 9908 is intended for general‑purpose centrifugal pump specification and procurement where moderate severity requirements are appropriate. Typical uses:
- General industrial water services
- HVAC and building services
- Light process duties in chemical, food or utility plants
- OEM pump manufacturing and standard product lines
Who uses this standard
- Pump manufacturers and designers ensuring compliance with Class III technical specs
- Procurement professionals and purchasers specifying pump requirements
- Consulting and mechanical engineers preparing pump schedules and installation documents
- Maintenance and reliability engineers referencing design and testing expectations
