ISO 9934-1:2016 specifies general principles for the magnetic particle testing of ferromagnetic materials. Magnetic particle testing is primarily applicable to the detection of surface-breaking discontinuities, particularly cracks. It can also detect discontinuities just below the surface but its sensitivity diminishes rapidly with depth. ISO 9934-1:2016 specifies the surface preparation of the part to be tested, magnetization techniques, requirements and application of the detection media, and the recording and interpretation of results. Acceptance criteria are not defined. Additional requirements for the magnetic particle testing of particular items are defined in product standards (see the relevant International Standards or European standards). ISO 9934-1:2016 does not apply to the residual magnetization method.

ISO 9934-1:2016 - "Non-destructive testing - Magnetic particle testing - Part 1: General principles" defines the general principles for performing magnetic particle testing (MPT) on ferromagnetic materials. The standard focuses on detecting surface-breaking discontinuities (especially cracks) and near-surface defects, while noting that sensitivity diminishes rapidly with depth. ISO 9934-1:2016 addresses surface preparation, magnetization techniques, detection media, viewing conditions, interpretation, recording, demagnetization and reporting. It does not define acceptance criteria and does not apply to the residual magnetization method.

- Scope & limitation: Primarily for surface-breaking defects; near-surface detection possible but limited by depth and skin effects.
- Surface preparation: Parts must be free of dirt, scale, grease, paint thicker than ~50 µm (which can reduce sensitivity), weld spatter and other contaminants that affect test sensitivity. Contrast aids may be used for non-fluorescent methods.
- Magnetization: Minimum adequate magnetic flux density recommended is 1 T; typical tangential field strength often around 2 kA/m, but depends on material permeability and temperature. Waveform control and crest factor are critical when using time-varying currents; true RMS instruments and waveform-aware measurement are required. Waveforms with crest factor > 3 should not be used without validation. Multidirectional magnetization is encouraged to detect defects in any orientation (flux effective up to ~60° from optimum). Annex A provides example current calculations for current-flow methods.
- Detection media & application: Selection, testing and application of magnetic powders or fluorescent media as per media performance requirements.
- Verification & performance testing: Verify magnetization via representative test pieces, field measurement close to the surface (see ISO 9934-3), or calculation. Flux indicators are guides but not substitutes for verification.
- Personnel & safety: Testing should be performed by qualified personnel (certification recommended per ISO 9712). Consider health, safety and environmental regulations; beware of strong magnetic fields near sensitive equipment.
- Reporting: Record procedure, magnetization method, media used, indications and interpretation. Acceptance criteria are left to product or contract standards.
