ISO 9996:1996 - "Mechanical vibration and shock - Disturbance to human activity and performance - Classification" provides a simple, systematic classification of how mechanical vibration and shock disturb volitional human activity and task performance. It is intended as an aid when developing guidelines for evaluating human whole‑body exposure to mechanical vibration and shock in the frequency range 0.1 Hz to 80 Hz, with the primary aim of preserving unimpaired activity, task performance and safety.
The standard covers disturbance caused by continuous, intermittent, transient or repetitive oscillatory motion (including shock) that affects people, task components, or surroundings. It applies to effects mediated by direct mechanical interference, non‑injurious physiological changes, or reversible sensory impairment - and explicitly does not cover performance loss due to motion‑related injury or permanent disability.
