Home Electronic System (HES) standards describe the architecture of home control systems including communication and interoperability aspects. This International Standard specifies the general features as well as the basic functional structure of an HES.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14543-2-1:2006 defines the general features and architecture of a Home Electronic System (HES). It provides an introductory framework and specifies the basic functional structure and interfaces for HES implementations, including the concept of device modularity. The standard positions HES within the OSI model and outlines how home control systems-covering lighting, heating, security, entertainment, energy management and more-should be modelled to achieve communication and interoperability across different media (power line, twisted pair, radio, infrared, etc.).
Key topics and requirements
- HES reference model: A layered architecture aligned with OSI concepts (physical through application layers) that describes components and their interactions.
- Communication layers: Coverage of physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation and application layers, and media aspects for home networks.
- Device modularity: Definition and scope of modular device design-how devices are composed of modules and application objects within a device application process.
- Application model: Concepts for application processes, application entities/objects and standardized application protocols for HES message exchange.
- Management functions: System and application management responsibilities, including resource, connection and configuration management across layers.
- System aspects: Network topology, interapplication interaction, grouping of devices, access control and connection categories.
- Conformance and terminology: New HES-specific terms and normative references (notably ISO/IEC 7498-1 and ISO/IEC 10192-1 for universal interface definitions).
Practical applications and users
ISO/IEC 14543-2-1 is practical for anyone designing, deploying or certifying home automation and smart home solutions:
- Manufacturers of HES devices (sensors, controllers, gateways) use it to design interoperable, modular products.
- Systems integrators and installers planning multi-application, mixed-media home networks benefit from the architecture and management guidance.
- Architects and builders use the guidance to plan wiring/media routes and future-proof installations.
- Software/IoT developers implementing application protocols and device application processes rely on the model for interoperability.
- Certification bodies and standards committees reference its conformance and terminology to assess compliance.
Related standards
- ISO/IEC 7498-1 (OSI Basic Reference Model)
- ISO/IEC 10192-1 (HES universal interface class 1)
- Other parts of ISO/IEC 14543 (Parts 3.x, 5.x and media-specific parts) and ISO/IEC 18012 (product interoperability guidelines)
This standard is essential for building scalable, interoperable home electronic systems that support modular devices and multiple application domains while enabling predictable management and integration across varied media.
