The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) protocol is designed to provide an efficient peer-to-peer I/O bus with the maximum number of hosts and peripherals determined by the bus width (8 or 16). This International Standard defines the SCSI command set extensions to access multimedia features for all classes of SCSI devices.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14776-362:2006 - Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) Part 362: Multimedia commands-2 (MMC-2) specifies the SCSI command set extensions used to access multimedia features on optical and other media devices. Known as MMC-2, this International Standard extends SCSI for CD/DVD device models, feature and profile definitions, mode pages, detailed command descriptions (read, write, format, control), error reporting and compliance requirements for interfaces such as ATAPI and SBP-2. It is essential for implementing and interoperating with optical drives and multimedia SCSI devices.
Key Topics
- C/DVD device models: logical block addressing, multi-session and track topology, CD and DVD-specific structures, ECC/sector configuration, removable medium behavior and changers.
- Features & profiles: feature codes and profile lists (CD-ROM, CD-R, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/W, etc.), persistent/current bits and profile parameters for drive capabilities.
- Mode pages & parameters: mode select/sense pages for read/write behavior, error recovery, write parameters, CD audio control, power and timeout settings.
- Command set (MMC-2): comprehensive SCSI multimedia commands such as BLANK, CLOSE TRACK/SESSION, GET CONFIGURATION, READ/WRITE (including READ CD, READ DVD STRUCTURE), REPORT/ SEND KEY, PLAY/PAUSE, LOAD/UNLOAD, SYNCHRONIZE CACHE and many others with command formats and expected responses.
- Error reporting & sense data: additional sense codes for CD, deferred error handling and failure reporting control.
- Copy protection & security: DVD-CSS and REPORT/SEND KEY mechanisms for content protection are addressed.
- Interoperability annexes: normative guidance for ATAPI compliance and SBP-2 (serial bus protocol) storage model implementation.
Applications
- Optical drive manufacturers and firmware engineers: implement MMC-2 commands, feature profiles and mode pages for compliant CD/DVD drives.
- Operating system and driver developers: integrate SCSI/MMC-2 command handling in kernel-level drivers, media stacks and device drivers.
- Burning and authoring software: use defined commands for writing, finalizing and manipulating sessions/tracks on optical media.
- Storage integrators and test labs: validate conformity, implement ATAPI/SBP-2 interoperability and perform compliance testing.
- Forensics and archival tools: reliably read complex CD/DVD structures and multi-session discs per standard behavior.
Related Standards
