ISO/IEC 15444-11:2007 provides a syntax that allows JPEG 2000 coded image data to be protected for transmission over wireless channels and networks. Protection services include error detection and correction capability for header and bitstream, description of the error sensitivity of different portions of the compressed data, and description of possible residual errors in the compressed data. The syntax allows these protection services to be applied to coded image data in part or in their entirety. These services are designed so as to maintain the inherent features of JPEG 2000, such as scalability and access to various spatial areas, resolution levels, colour components and quality layers, while providing protection services on these elements.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 15444-11:2007 (also published as ITU‑T Rec. T.810) defines Wireless JPEG 2000 (JPWL) - an extensible syntax and set of methods to protect JPEG 2000 codestreams during transmission over error-prone wireless channels and networks. The standard specifies how to add error-detection and error-correction metadata and structures to a JPEG 2000 codestream while preserving core JPEG 2000 features such as scalability, spatial area access, resolution levels, colour components and quality layers.
Key Topics
- Error protection for headers and bitstream: Syntax for signalling and applying forward error correction (FEC) and error detection to both main/tile-part headers and compressed bitstreams.
- Error sensitivity descriptor: Mechanisms to describe the relative importance (sensitivity) of different portions of the codestream so protection can be prioritized.
- Residual errors descriptor: Ways to signal possible remaining errors after protection and decoding.
- Selective/unequal error protection: Support for applying protection to parts of the codestream selectively (partial or full protection), enabling efficient use of bandwidth and redundancy.
- JPWL marker segments and codestream rules: Definitions of new markers, marker segments and codestream construction rules to carry protection information.
- Tools and blocks: Error Protection Blocks (EPB), Error Protection Capability (EPC) descriptors and related parameters for FEC and signalling.
- Guidelines and interoperability: Annexes provide encoder/decoder implementation guidelines, recommended decoder error handling behavior, error-resilient entropy coding, and interoperability rules with JPEG 2000 Part 1 and other parts (e.g., JPSEC).
- Registration and maintenance: JPWL Registration Authority and procedures for tool identification and parameter registration.
Applications
JPWL is designed for systems that need robust JPEG 2000 image delivery over unreliable links:
- Mobile and wireless imaging (streaming, MMS, mobile video stills)
- Broadcast and multicast over wireless or satellite
- Surveillance and remote sensing where packet loss is likely
- Any application requiring scalable access to image regions and quality over lossy networks
Who uses it:
- Codec and encoder/decoder implementers
- Network and systems engineers designing wireless image delivery
- Device manufacturers (mobile, CCTV, satellite terminals)
- Service providers and integrators needing resilient image transmission
