This document establishes a classification for phenolic and aminoplastic polycondensation adhesives according to their suitability for use for load-bearing timber products in defined climatic exposure conditions, and specifies performance requirements for such adhesives for the factory manufacture or factory-like manufacturing conditions of load-bearing timber products only. This document only specifies the performance of an adhesive for use in an environment corresponding to the defined conditions. The performance requirements of this document are applicable to the adhesive only, not to the manufacturing timber products. This document does not cover the performance of adhesives for on-site gluing (except for factory-like conditions) or the production of wood-based panels, except solid wood panels, or modified and stabilized wood with considerably reduced swelling and shrinkage properties, e.g. acetylated wood, heat treated wood and polymer impregnated wood. This document is primarily intended for use by adhesive manufacturers and for use in timber products bonded with adhesives, to assess or control the quality of adhesives. The requirements are applicable to the type testing of the adhesives. Production control activities are outside the scope of this document. Adhesives meeting the requirements of this document are adequate for use in load-bearing timber products, provided that the bonding process has been carried out according to an appropriate product standard.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN 301:2023+A1:2026 is a European standard specifying the classification and performance requirements for phenolic and aminoplastic adhesives used in load-bearing timber structures. These adhesives are critical in the factory manufacture of timber products that must meet stringent strength and durability standards, especially across various climatic exposure conditions. The standard supports the assessment and control of adhesive quality, ensuring compliance with product requirements relevant to the construction and timber industries.
This document applies exclusively to the performance of phenolic and aminoplastic polycondensation adhesives for use in controlled factory or factory-like environments. It does not address final product performance, on-site gluing (apart from factory-like manufacture), nor the bonding of modified or stabilized wood products other than solid wood panels.
Key Topics
- Classification of Adhesives: The standard establishes a comprehensive framework for classifying adhesives by type (I and II), application area (General Purpose, Finger Jointing, Gap Filling), maximum operating temperature, and suitability for climatic service classes (indoor, covered exterior, exterior).
- Performance Requirements: Detailed mandatory tests-including tensile shear strength, delamination resistance, wood fibre damage, shrinkage stress, and static load-ensure adhesive suitability for structural purposes.
- Test Methods: Reference is made to multiple EN 302 series test methods that define procedures for mechanical, physical, and chemical property determination under simulated service conditions.
- Marking and Labelling: Adherence to clear labelling, incorporating adhesive type, batch data, shelf life, and key physical properties, is required for traceability and compliance.
- Limitations of Scope: The standard applies only to adhesives themselves, not to timber product manufacturing, production quality control, or applications in modified woods with enhanced stability properties.
Applications
This standard is principally intended for:
- Adhesive Manufacturers: Ensures product consistency, performance, and market acceptance for adhesives intended for load-bearing timber applications.
- Engineered Timber Product Producers: Offers assurance that adhesives used in glulam (glued laminated timber), solid wood panels, and structural finger jointing meet defined performance thresholds, provided product standards are followed.
- Testing Laboratories: Provides a reference for performing type testing on adhesives to verify compliance with performance requirements before adhesives are approved for use.
- Designers and Specifiers: Offers criteria for selecting adhesives based on expected service conditions (e.g., humidity, temperature) to ensure timber structure reliability.
Typical products addressed include factory-manufactured glued laminated timber, finger-jointed structural timber, and solid wood structural panels for use in residential, commercial, and civil engineering projects.
Related Standards
For comprehensive evaluation and performance verification, the following standards are referenced and complement SIST EN 301:2023+A1:2026:
- EN 302 Series: Test methods for adhesives in load-bearing timber structures (tensile shear, delamination, fibre damage, shrinkage, static load, assembly/pressing time, working life).
- EN 408: Specifies determination of physical and mechanical properties of structural timber and glued laminated timber.
- EN 1995-1-1 (Eurocode 5): Design of timber structures-provides the context for required adhesive performance in construction.
- EN 1245: Determination of pH value for adhesives.
- EN 12092: Viscosity measurement for adhesives.
By following SIST EN 301:2023+A1:2026, stakeholders ensure that phenolic and aminoplastic adhesives used in structural timber applications contribute to the strength, safety, and longevity of timber buildings and infrastructure, meeting European and international best practices.
