This document specifies the minimum requirements for general safety and structural safety which include strength, reliability and stability of all types of outdoor seating for camping use, for domestic use and for contract use, for adults, without regard to materials, design or manufacturing processes. It does not apply to street furniture. It does not include requirements for removable upholstery, including the cover and filling. It does not include requirements for the durability of castors/wheels and height adjustment mechanisms. It does not include requirements for electrical safety. It does not include requirements for the resistance to ageing and degradation caused by light, temperature and moisture. The test requirements contained within this document are based on use by persons weighing up to 110 kg.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN 581-2:2026 defines the essential mechanical safety requirements and test methods for all types of outdoor seating intended for adult users. This standard covers seating designed for camping, domestic, and contract (public access) applications, regardless of materials, construction, or manufacturing methods. The goal is to ensure strength, reliability, and stability across varied outdoor conditions and uses. The standard excludes street furniture, electrical safety, removable upholstery, certain mechanical features, and durability against environmental ageing.
By harmonizing requirements across Europe, SIST EN 581-2:2026 supports manufacturers, importers, and retailers in delivering safer and more reliable outdoor seating products to consumers, while meeting market and regulatory expectations.
Key Topics
-
General Safety Requirements:
All accessible parts must be free from sharp edges and burrs, designed to minimize physical injury and damage to users during intended use. Edges are required to be rounded or chamfered, especially on those components in direct contact with the user. -
Structural Safety:
Outdoor seating must withstand defined static and durability loads without loss of function, breakage, or unintended loosening of parts. Load and stability testing simulates real-world use by adults weighing up to 110 kg. -
Shear and Compression Points:
Requirements address risks from moving and adjustable parts-shear and compression points are assessed both during handling (setting up and folding) and in powered mechanisms. Tests are designed to minimize the potential for finger trapping and related injuries. -
Stability Tests:
Stability under forward, sideways, and rearward forces is tested to prevent tipping during use. Seating with a low mass and height (under specific thresholds) is exempted from certain tests. -
Marking and Information for Use:
Clear user instructions and product marking are required, covering assembly, maintenance, intended use (camping, domestic, contract), and warnings related to specific product features (e.g., loungers with wheels).
Applications
SIST EN 581-2:2026 is relevant for:
- Manufacturers producing outdoor seating for the camping and leisure market, domestic gardens, patios, balconies, hotels, restaurants, and contract environments such as event venues.
- Quality Assurance and Testing Laboratories seeking standardized protocols for evaluating product safety and durability.
- Retailers and Importers needing to verify compliance and safety before placing products on the European market.
- Facilities Managers responsible for specifying safe, compliant outdoor furniture in public and semi-public settings.
Practical value:
- Reduces risk of injury to users through detailed safety and stability criteria.
- Helps demonstrate product compliance with EU regulations and CE marking requirements.
- Provides clear guidance on mechanical test methods for consistent quality assurance.
- Encourages design innovation by specifying only performance requirements, not materials or construction processes.
