IEC 61753-021-03:2026 defines minimum initial test and measurement requirements and severities which single-mode fibre optic connectors terminated as a pigtail or a patchcord satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting the IEC standard category OP (outdoor protected environment), as defined in IEC 61753-1. If tests are performed on the connectors terminated as pigtails or patchcords for category OPHD, OP+ or OP+HD and the product passes these tests, the product will be automatically qualified or categorized as meeting the IEC standard for category OP. If tests are performed on the connectors terminated as pigtails or patchcords for category OP, and the product passes these tests, the product will be automatically qualified or categorized as meeting the IEC standard for category C or CHD. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 61753-021-3 published in 2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) update of environmental categories (from U to OP), tests and their severities in accordance with IEC 61753‑1; b) changes in the terms and definitions of the different types of test samples (pigtail test samples and patchcord test samples) used in the various tests to avoid confusion; c) update of fibre naming conventions in accordance with IEC 60793‑2‑50 and addition of provisions for B‑657 fibres; d) addition of all the attenuation and return loss grades defined in IEC 61753‑1; e) deletion of the static side load test; f) addition of provisions for rectangular ferrule connectors; g) addition of the fibre optic connector proof test with static load – side pull; h) update of the flexing of the strain relief test to use change of attenuation instead of transient loss; i) addition of Annex B for visual examination of the outer cable sheath movement of reinforced cables as an additional requirement for change of temperature, cable retention and flexing of the strain relief tests.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN IEC 61753-021-03:2026 is an international standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and harmonized with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under IEC 61753-021-03:2026. This standard specifies the minimum test and measurement requirements and defined severities that single-mode fibre optic connectors, terminated as pigtails and patchcords, must satisfy to meet the category OP (Outdoor Protected Environment) criteria. The category OP is defined in IEC 61753-1 and covers connectors used in environments where outdoor protection is provided, ensuring robust performance in various environmental conditions.
This edition is a technical revision of the previous IEC 61753-021-3:2012 and reflects updates aligned with current technological advancements and industry needs. The standard provides requirements that support interoperability, reliability, and quality in fibre optic connections for outdoor applications.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Classification
- Defines requirements for single-mode fibre optic connectors terminated as pigtails and patchcords.
- Focuses on performance in outdoor protected environments.
- Connectors passing higher environmental category tests (OPHD, OP+, OP+HD) are automatically qualified for OP.
-
Test and Measurement
- Outlines minimum test conditions, including mechanical, climatic, and optical performance.
- References key IEC test methods for vibration, temperature changes, attenuation, return loss, strain relief, and more.
-
Technical Changes in 2026 Edition
- Updated environmental categories (from U to OP) and associated test severities.
- Revised terms and definitions for test samples-pigtail test samples and patchcord test samples-to avoid ambiguity.
- Updated fibre naming conventions to include the latest types defined in IEC 60793-2-50, supporting B-657 fibres.
- Inclusion of all attenuation and return loss grades set out in IEC 61753-1.
- Addition of new provisions for rectangular ferrule connectors and cable sheath movement.
- Introduction of the connector proof test with static load, side pull.
- Test procedures for flexing strain relief and requirements for visual examination of reinforced cables.
Applications
This standard has practical value for organizations involved in the design, manufacture, testing, and installation of fibre optic connectors, especially where outdoor reliability is crucial. Typical applications include:
- Telecommunications infrastructure: Outdoor junctions, street cabinets, and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments.
- Enterprise data networks: Outdoor protected connectivity between buildings or in campus environments.
- Industrial installations: Factories, refineries, or remote sensor locations needing robust fibre optic links.
- Utility and transport networks: Railways, highways, electrical substations, and intelligent traffic systems.
By adhering to SIST EN IEC 61753-021-03:2026, organizations ensure that their fibre optic connecting solutions perform reliably in protected outdoor settings, meeting recognized international benchmarks for quality and performance.
Related Standards
Implementing SIST EN IEC 61753-021-03:2026 often requires reference to several related international standards:
- IEC 61753-1: General guidance on performance standards for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
- IEC 60793-2-50: Product specifications for class B single-mode optical fibres, including latest conventions (B-652, B-657).
- IEC 61300 series: Basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic connectors and passive components, covering methods for vibration, mating durability, tensile strength, impact, and more.
- IEC 61754 and IEC 61755 series: Specifications for connector interfaces and optical interfaces.
- IEC 60794-2-23 / IEC 60794-2-50: Standards for fibre optic cables used in connector assemblies.
