ABSTRACT This specification covers the material, dimensional and mechanical property requirements for plain and deformed steel wire and welded wire reinforcements produced from hot-rolled rods that are to be used for the reinforcement of concrete. Tension test procedures are detailed for each type of wire reinforcement to examine their adherence to specified tensile strength, yield strength, and reduction of area requirements. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers carbon-steel wire and welded wire reinforcement produced from hot-rolled rod to be used for the reinforcement of concrete. The steel wire is cold-worked, drawn or rolled, plain (non-deformed, as-drawn or galvanized), or deformed. Welded wire reinforcement is made from plain or deformed wire, or a combination of plain and deformed wire. Common wire sizes and dimensions are given in Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, and Table 4. Actual wire sizes are not restricted to those shown in the tables. Note 1: Welded wire for concrete reinforcement has historically been described by various terms: welded wire fabric, WWF, fabric, and mesh. The wire reinforcement industry has adopted the term welded wire reinforcement (WWR) as being more representative of the applications of the products being manufactured. Therefore, the term welded wire fabric has been replaced with the term welded wire reinforcement in this specification and in related specifications. 1.2 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text the SI units are shown in brackets (except in Table 2 and Table 4). The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with this specification. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM A1064/A1064M-24 is the international standard specification for carbon-steel wire and welded wire reinforcement, both plain and deformed, intended for use in concrete reinforcement. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines the material, dimensional, and mechanical property requirements for steel reinforcement products manufactured from hot-rolled rods. Welded wire reinforcement (WWR), formerly known as welded wire fabric or mesh, is a critical component in the construction industry, ensuring reliable performance and strength within concrete structures.
ASTM A1064 provides detailed criteria for tension testing, dimensional tolerances, bend tests, and weld shear testing, ensuring that reinforced concrete structures meet stringent safety and performance requirements. Compliance with this standard supports quality assurance, international interoperability, and supports regulatory compliance in infrastructure projects globally.
Key Topics
- Product Scope: Covers cold-worked, drawn or rolled carbon-steel wire-plain (either as-drawn or galvanized) or deformed-and welded wire reinforcement manufactured from these wires. Both inch-pound and SI units are addressed as separate standards.
- Types of Reinforcement:
- Plain Wire: Steel wire without surface deformations, available as-drawn or hot-dip galvanized.
- Deformed Wire: Steel wire with physical deformations (indentations or ribs) to enhance mechanical bonding with concrete.
- Welded Wire Reinforcement (WWR): Assembled from plain or deformed wires joined by electrical resistance welding at each intersection.
- Mechanical Properties: Specifies minimum requirements for tensile strength, yield strength, and reduction of area, tested in accordance with ASTM A370.
- Dimensional Requirements: Stipulates nominal diameters, cross-sectional areas, weight tolerances, and permissible variations for both plain and deformed wire sizes.
- Weld Quality: Includes weld shear strength testing to ensure bond and anchorage integrity.
- Testing and Certification: Details the sampling, testing frequency, and acceptance criteria, including provisions for certification of conformance and retest options.
Applications
ASTM A1064/A1064M-24 is widely used in construction projects where reinforced concrete is essential. Typical applications include:
- Structural Slabs and Foundations: WWR provides uniform reinforcement for concrete floors, pavements, and ground slabs.
- Precast Concrete Elements: Panels, pipes, and barriers rely on welded wire reinforcement for structural performance.
- Highway and Bridge Projects: Reinforced concrete pavements and bridge decks use these materials for enhanced durability and crack control.
- Walls and Columns: Vital for improving load distribution and reducing risk of structural failure in vertical elements.
- Masonry Reinforcement: Supplies extra tensile strength within concrete masonry walls.
Compliance with ASTM A1064 supports durability, reduces construction time, and promotes consistent quality in reinforced concrete structures. The standard’s dual-unit approach ensures suitability for projects in regions using either metric or imperial measurement systems.
