ABSTRACT This specification covers the basic requirements for 0.177 in. (4.50 mm) diameter metallic-coated carbon steel marcelled tension wires for use with chain-link fences. Three types of coatings are covered here, namely: Type I, aluminum-coated (aluminized); Type II, zinc-coated (galvanized); and Type III, zinc-5 % aluminum-mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM) alloy-coated. When tested, the wires shall adhere specified requirements for breaking strength, size, weight of coating, and adherence of coating. The steel rod from which the wire is drawn shall be made by the open-hearth, electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen process, and the corresponding wire shall be cold-drawn, metallic-coated at finished sizes, then marcelled as appropriate. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers 0.177 in. (4.50 mm) diameter metallic-coated carbon steel marcelled tension wire for use with chain-link fence. The 0.177 in. (4.50 mm) diameter metallic-coated wire shall be produced in accordance with Specification A817. Three types of coatings are covered: 1.1.1 Type I—Aluminum-coated (aluminized), 1.1.2 Type II—Zinc-coated (galvanized), and 1.1.3 Type III—Zinc-5 % Aluminum Mischmetal (Zn5Al-MM) alloy-coated. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM A824-01(2022): Standard Specification for Metallic-Coated Steel Marcelled Tension Wire for Use With Chain Link Fence establishes the requirements for the manufacture and use of metallic-coated carbon steel tension wire in chain-link fencing systems. This standard, developed by ASTM International, focuses on 0.177 in. (4.50 mm) diameter steel wires that are cold-drawn, metallic-coated, and marcelled to provide strength, durability, and flexibility where structural reinforcement of chain-link fences is essential.
Three types of metallic coatings are addressed:
- Type I: Aluminum-coated (aluminized)
- Type II: Zinc-coated (galvanized)
- Type III: Zinc-5 % aluminum mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM) alloy-coated
The standard covers the physical and mechanical properties, the coating requirements, adherence tests, and general manufacturing and packaging guidelines, ensuring consistency and performance in fencing applications.
Key Topics
-
Material Requirements:
- Specifies carbon steel wire manufactured through open-hearth, electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen processes.
- Cold-drawn wire is used for optimal strength and marcelled for enhanced tensioning.
-
Coatings & Protection:
- Outlines three coating types to ward off corrosion and environmental wear.
- Includes details on coating adherence, weight, and uniformity.
-
Mechanical Properties:
- Defines minimum breaking strength and dimension tolerances.
- Sets standards for the offset and pitch achieved by marcelled processing.
-
Testing & Inspection:
- Covers standard procedures for quality control, including sample testing, retesting protocols, and rejection criteria.
- Details requirements for certification and inspection, ensuring traceability and compliance.
-
Packaging & Marking:
- Specifies labeling, packaging, and shipping requirements for traceable and safe material handling.
Applications
ASTM A824-01(2022) metallic-coated steel marcelled tension wire is primarily used in chain-link fence construction, providing essential lateral and longitudinal support. Typical applications include:
- Security Fencing: Increased structural integrity for perimeter security in commercial, industrial, and residential settings.
- Sports Facilities: Reinforcement of fencing at sports fields, playgrounds, and parks.
- Public Infrastructure: Installation along highways, railways, and utility properties.
- Industrial Sites: Durable fencing solutions for factories, warehouses, and restricted zones.
This specification ensures that tension wires used in critical infrastructure offer superior resistance to weather, rust, and mechanical stress, extending the service life of chain-link fencing systems.
