ABSTRACT This specification covers wrought high-strength low-alloy butt-welding steel fittings of seamless and electric fusion-welded construction for applications in high-pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems. Starting materials shall consist of plate, sheet, forgings, forging quality bar, and seamless or fusion-welded tubular products with filler metal added. Materials shall be heat treated by normalizing, quenching, and tempering or stress relieving. Specimens shall conform to required values of chemical composition and mechanical properties, namely: yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, notch toughness, and hardness. This specification does not require hydrostatic testing. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers wrought high-strength ferritic steel butt-welding fittings of seamless and electric fusion-welded construction. Dimensions of the fittings are provided in the latest revisions of ASME B16.9 and MSS-SP-75. Butt-welding fittings differing from ASME B16.9 shall be furnished in accordance with Supplementary Requirement S58 of Specification A960/A960M. These fittings are for use in high-pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems. 1.2 Optional supplementary requirements are provided for fittings when a greater degree of examination is desired. One or more of the supplementary requirements may be specified in the order. 1.3 This specification does not cover cast-welding fittings or fittings machined from castings. 1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. Unless the order specifies the applicable “M” specification designation (SI units), the material shall be furnished to inch-pound units. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM A860/A860M-22 Standard Specification for Wrought High-Strength Ferritic Steel Butt-Welding Fittings provides comprehensive requirements for the manufacture, testing, and application of high-strength, low-alloy steel pipe fittings. These fittings are essential components in high-pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems, where safety and reliability are critical. The standard encompasses seamless and electric fusion-welded construction, with strict criteria for materials, manufacturing practices, mechanical properties, and dimensional compliance.
Compliance with ASTM A860/A860M-22 ensures fittings can withstand demanding service conditions while maintaining structural integrity and weldability.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements:
- Covers high-strength, low-alloy ferritic steels, manufactured from plate, sheet, forgings, bars, and tubular products.
- Materials must be fully killed, fine grain, and produced using processes such as electric arc furnace or basic oxygen furnace.
- Heat Treatment:
- All fittings are subject to heat treatment by normalizing, quenching, and tempering, or stress relieving to achieve required strength and toughness.
- Mechanical Properties:
- Fittings must meet minimum yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, notch toughness (Charpy V-notch at -50°F/-46°C), and hardness criteria.
- Dimensional Standards:
- Dimensions align with ASME B16.9 and MSS-SP-75, ensuring compatibility in high-pressure pipelines.
- Alternative designs may be supplied per supplementary requirements if agreed upon in the order.
- Manufacturing Practices:
- Electric fusion-welded seams and joints are required to undergo radiographic examination for defect detection.
- Non-destructive examination (NDE) methods (liquid penetrant or magnetic particle) are mandated for certain product types like cold-formed tees and machined caps.
- Certification and Product Marking:
- Comprehensive test reports must document chemical analysis, mechanical properties, heat treatment, and NDE results.
- Fittings are distinctly marked to indicate manufacturing and testing attributes, including barcoding for traceability.
Applications
- High-Pressure Gas Transmission: The standard applies to durable and reliable fittings used in gas pipelines where consistent performance in extreme environments is essential.
- Oil Pipeline Systems: Fittings manufactured to ASTM A860/A860M-22 are chosen for their superior mechanical and impact toughness properties, making them ideal for oil transport and distribution systems.
- Industrial Piping: In chemical, energy, and process industries, these butt-welding fittings ensure operational safety and regulatory compliance in high-pressure applications.
- Infrastructure Projects: The standard is frequently referenced in specifications for new infrastructure and pipeline upgrades requiring code-compliant, high-strength connections.
Related Standards
- ASTM A960/A960M: Specification for common requirements for wrought steel piping fittings incorporated by reference for general requirements and supplementary criteria.
- ASME B16.9: Covers overall dimensions for steel butt-welding fittings.
- MSS-SP-75: Provides dimensional and performance requirements for high-strength wrought butt-welding fittings.
- ASTM A751: Outlines test methods and practices for chemical analysis of steel products.
- ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections V, VIII, IX: Referenced for welding qualification, examination, and pressure vessel requirements.
- MSS SP-25: Standard marking system for valves, fittings, flanges, and unions.
For manufacturers, engineers, and procurers in the pipeline and energy sectors, adherence to ASTM A860/A860M-22 is vital for ensuring quality, safety, and interoperability of high-performance butt-welding fittings in high-pressure service environments.
