SCOPE 1.1 This specification establishes the requirements for rolled copper-clad stainless steel, sheet and strip in flat lengths, coils, or in thicknesses for roofing, siding, flashing, gutters, downspouts, and general sheet metal work for outside building construction. 1.2 Units—The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.2.1 Exception—Grain size units are stated in SI units. 1.3 The following safety hazard caveat pertains only to the test method(s) described in this specification. 1.3.1 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM B506-22: Standard Specification for Copper-Clad Stainless Steel Sheet and Strip for Building Construction establishes the requirements for rolled copper-clad stainless steel sheet and strip materials. These materials are supplied in flat lengths, coils, or various thicknesses and are primarily intended for a range of architectural applications such as roofing, siding, flashing, gutters, downspouts, windows, doors, curtain wall components, and general sheet metal work for building exteriors. The specification, developed by ASTM International, ensures consistent material quality, performance, and compatibility with relevant regulatory and safety norms in building construction.
Key Topics
- Material Composition: Requires roll-bonded layers with a copper cladding and a stainless steel core. Standard cladding ratio is 10/80/10 (copper/stainless steel/copper), unless otherwise specified.
- Physical Properties & Tolerances:
- Dimensions: Strict tolerances for thickness, width, length, and straightness according to supplied tables.
- Mechanical Properties: Minimum tensile and yield strength requirements for annealed and other tempers.
- Grain Size: Fully recrystallized material in both cladding and core required for annealed tempers.
- Manufacturing Process: Roll bonding and, where required, annealing to meet temper properties.
- Ordering Information: Specifies criteria such as alloy designation, temper, dimensions, quantity, and certification or test reports for procurement.
- Testing & Inspection:
- Product must conform to set standards for tensile strength, grain size, and (optionally) Rockwell hardness.
- Methods reference ASTM E8/E8M for tension testing, E18 for Rockwell hardness, and E112 for grain size.
- Provisions for inspections, retests, certification, and rejection procedures help assure compliance.
- Packaging and Marking: Requirements for adequate protection during shipment and clear labeling for identification upon delivery.
Applications
Copper-clad stainless steel sheet and strip offer a unique combination of corrosion resistance, strength, and aesthetic appeal, making them highly suitable for diverse building construction uses. Practical applications include:
- Architectural Roofing & Siding: Used as weather-resistant and visually pleasing surfaces.
- Flashing, Gutters, and Downspouts: Provide long service life and minimal maintenance due to superior corrosion resistance.
- Curtain Wall Components: Combine mechanical durability with high aesthetics.
- Windows and Doors: Enable robust, low-maintenance frameworks in both commercial and residential contexts.
- General Sheet Metal Work: Suitable for structural and decorative exterior building components.
The performance characteristics outlined in ASTM B506-22 ensure that products deliver consistent results in demanding environments, promoting durability and value in construction projects.
