SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 Alumina-silica refractory brick is produced from various combinations of alumina and silica-containing materials. These bricks can vary in chemical composition from almost 100 % alumina and little silica to almost 100 % silica and little alumina. It is therefore useful to establish a classification scheme based on physical properties and chemical analysis. One group, fireclay brick, is classified based on physical properties since some overlap of alumina and silica content can occur. A second group, high-alumina brick, is classified primarily based on alumina content. The classification allows those familiar with refractory materials to group similar products from various suppliers in a standard and consistent manner. SCOPE 1.1 This classification covers machine-made fireclay and high-alumina refractory brick, and its purpose is to set forth the various classes and types of these materials in accordance with their normal and characteristic properties, which are important in their use. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C27-98(2022): Standard Classification of Fireclay and High-Alumina Refractory Brick provides a systematic classification for machine-made fireclay and high-alumina refractory bricks. These bricks, essential materials in high-temperature industrial applications, are manufactured using various combinations of alumina and silica-based materials. The classification defined by ASTM ensures uniformity and reliability across the refractory materials industry, supporting consistent product quality and specification alignment among suppliers and end-users.
This international standard, governed by ASTM International, adheres to globally recognized standardization principles and is used extensively by industries such as steel, glass, ceramics, and power generation for their high-temperature processes.
Key Topics
-
Classification of Refractory Bricks:
- Fireclay bricks: Grouped based on physical properties due to overlaps in alumina and silica content.
- High-alumina bricks: Categorized mainly by percentage of alumina content.
-
Properties for Compliance: Bricks are classified by key physical and chemical properties, such as:
- Pyrometric Cone Equivalent (PCE)
- Modulus of rupture
- Bulk density
- Shrinkage after reheating
- Chemical composition (alumina and silica percentages)
-
Test Methods Referenced:
- ASTM C16: Load testing at high temperatures
- ASTM C24: Pyrometric cone equivalent determination
- ASTM C113: Reheat change
- ASTM C133: Cold crushing strength and modulus of rupture
- ASTM C134: Size, dimensional measurements, and bulk density
-
Classification Details:
- Fireclay bricks: Five classes (Super Duty, High Duty, Semi-Silica, Medium Duty, Low Duty), some subdivided by specific characteristics (e.g., spall resistant, slag resistant).
- High-Alumina bricks: Seven classes based on alumina content (ranging from 50% to 99%).
Applications
- Industrial Furnaces and Kilns: Fireclay and high-alumina refractory bricks are foundational in the construction and maintenance of furnaces, kilns, incinerators, and reactors that require stability at elevated temperatures.
- Metallurgical Processes: Critical for lining steel furnaces, foundries, and kilns in the iron and steel industry due to their thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength.
- Ceramic and Glass Production: Their stability and resistance to chemical attack make them ideal for glass tank linings and ceramic kilns.
- Power Generation: Used in boilers and combustion chambers, where enduring harsh thermal and chemical environments is crucial.
By standardizing classification, ASTM C27-98(2022) aids manufacturers and buyers in selecting appropriate refractory materials, improving performance and extending equipment service life.
