SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 The presence of certain impurities in silica brick tends to lower their refractoriness and service limits. This classification permits those familiar with refractories to predict the refractoriness of silica brick from their alkali and alumina contents. SCOPE 1.1 This classification is limited to silica brick meeting the following requirements: 1.1.1 Alumina (Al2O3) content of less than 1.50 %. 1.1.2 Titania (TiO2) content of less than 0.20 %. 1.1.3 Iron oxide (FeO3) content of less than 2.50 %. 1.1.4 Calcium oxide (CaO) content of less than 4.00 %. 1.1.5 Average modulus of rupture of not less than 500 psi (3.45 MPa). 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C416-97(2022): Standard Classification of Silica Refractory Brick is a widely recognized international standard established by ASTM International. This classification system provides rigorous guidelines for evaluating and categorizing silica refractory bricks based on their chemical composition and mechanical properties. The presence of impurities in silica bricks, particularly alkali and alumina content, can significantly affect their refractoriness and service limits. By defining clear parameters, ASTM C416 assists industries in predicting the performance, quality, and suitability of silica bricks for various high-temperature applications.
Key Topics
- Chemical Composition Requirements:
- Alumina (Al₂O₃) content must be less than 1.50%
- Titania (TiO₂) content must be less than 0.20%
- Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) content must be less than 2.50%
- Calcium oxide (CaO) content must be less than 4.00%
- Mechanical Property:
- Average modulus of rupture not less than 500 psi (3.45 MPa)
- Flux Factor Classification:
- Type A: Flux factor of 0.50 or less, indicating higher purity and refractoriness
- Type B: All other silica bricks in the defined scope
- Testing Methods:
- Chemical analysis using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP)
- Modulus of rupture tested according to ASTM C133
Applications
Silica refractory bricks, classified under ASTM C416, play a critical role in industries where high-temperature resistance and chemical durability are essential. Key application areas include:
- Steel and Glass Manufacturing: Silica bricks are extensively used to line furnaces, as they endure high temperatures and aggressive environments without significant deformation.
- Cement and Lime Kilns: The bricks provide excellent load-bearing capability and resist slag and flux attack.
- Thermal Insulation: Their thermal stability makes them suitable for insulating layers in industrial ovens and kilns.
- Incinerators and Power Plants: Used as part of the refractory lining, ensuring safe and efficient operation of combustion chambers.
Their precise classification per ASTM C416 ensures that only silica bricks with specified impurity levels and mechanical strength are selected for the most demanding service conditions, contributing to operational longevity and safety.
Related Standards
The ASTM C416-97(2022) standard references key documents and works in synergy with other ASTM and international standards relevant to refractories and silica bricks, such as:
