SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 3.1 This practice is used to standardize the firing conditions of refractory concrete specimens prepared in accordance with Practice C862. The standards are set down to minimize laboratory-to-laboratory variation and do not attempt to duplicate any particular field applications. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers the firing of specimens made from refractory concretes (castable refractories) in accordance with Practice C862 for cast specimens. The procedure is also recommended for heating rates to be used for high-temperature test methods such as Test Methods C16, C583, etc., when these methods are used to test refractory concretes. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM C865-22: Standard Practice for Firing Refractory Concrete Specimens provides standardized procedures for firing specimens made from refractory concretes, also known as castable refractories. Developed by ASTM International, this standard is essential for ensuring consistency and reliability in the laboratory testing of refractory concrete, specifically those prepared per Practice C862. The guidelines within ASTM C865-22 are designed to minimize variations in specimen preparation and firing across different laboratories, supporting effective quality control and research in high-temperature applications.
Key Topics
- Standardized Firing Conditions ASTM C865-22 establishes consistent firing conditions for refractory concrete specimens, helping reduce discrepancies in testing results between laboratories.
- Preparation of Samples The practice details how to properly prepare and size specimens, including recommendations for cutting and drying samples to avoid defects such as grain pull-out or cracking.
- Heating Rate Recommendations The standard specifies maximum heating rates for specimens of various sizes, ensuring safe and effective firing while maintaining sample integrity.
- Soak Temperature Control Instructions are provided for maintaining appropriate soak temperatures and atmospheres during the firing process, including oxygen content and avoidance of combustibles.
- Temperature Measurement Guidance on using calibrated thermocouples and alternative devices, such as optical pyrometers, ensures accurate and consistent temperature monitoring.
- Cooling Procedures Recommendations for controlled cooling rates help prevent thermal shock and additional specimen damage following high-temperature exposure.
Applications
ASTM C865-22 is relevant for laboratories and industries involved in the development, quality assurance, and performance testing of refractory concrete materials. Its primary uses include:
- Laboratory Testing of Castable Refractories Ensures that all specimens undergo uniform firing cycles before physical property testing, supporting reliable comparison and benchmark data.
- Preparation for High-Temperature Test Methods The firing procedure is recommended for use before conducting high-temperature tests such as load testing (ASTM C16) and modulus of rupture testing (ASTM C583).
- Quality Control in Manufacturing Refractory material manufacturers use ASTM C865-22 to control variables that may impact the quality and consistency of castable refractory products.
- Research and Development Facilitates reproducible results in R&D settings, helping to innovate new refractory mixes and formulations.
Related Standards
- ASTM C862 Practice for Preparing Refractory Concrete Specimens by Casting - outlines casting techniques for specimens that are later fired using ASTM C865-22.
- ASTM C16 Test Method for Load Testing Refractory Shapes at High Temperatures - often uses specimens fired according to ASTM C865-22.
- ASTM C583 Test Method for Modulus of Rupture of Refractory Materials at Elevated Temperatures - relies on standard firing practices for accurate results.
- ASTM E230 Specification for Temperature-Electromotive Force (emf) Tables for Standardized Thermocouples - referenced for proper temperature measurement and instrument calibration.
By adhering to ASTM C865-22, professionals in the refractory and high-temperature materials sector can achieve greater reliability, comparability, and repeatability in their experimental results and product testing. This standard ultimately supports the development and supply of high-quality refractory concretes suited for industrial and commercial thermal applications.
