Standard Specification for Nonreinforced Concrete Specified Strength Culvert, Storm Drain, and Sewer Pipe
Standard Specification for Nonreinforced Concrete Specified Strength Culvert, Storm Drain, and Sewer Pipe
ABSTRACT This specification covers nonreinforced concrete pipe designed for specified strengths and intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, and storm water and for the construction of culverts. Strength test and load test shall be made in accordance with the specified requirements. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers nonreinforced concrete pipe designed for specified strengths and intended to be used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, and storm water and for the construction of culverts. 1.2 A complete companion to Specification C985 has been developed, C985M; therefore, no metric equivalents are presented in this specification. Note 1: This specification is a manufacturing and purchase specification only and does not include requirements for bedding, backfill, or the relationship between field load conditions and the designated strength of the pipe. However, experience has shown that the successful performance of this product depends upon the proper selection of the pipe strength, type of bedding and backfill, and care that the installation conforms to the construction specifications. The owner of the concrete pipe specified herein is cautioned that he must correlate the field requirements with the pipe strength specified and provide inspection at the construction site. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
ASTM C985-22: Standard Specification for Nonreinforced Concrete Specified Strength Culvert, Storm Drain, and Sewer Pipe provides essential criteria for the design, manufacturing, and quality assurance of nonreinforced concrete pipes used in stormwater, sewage, and industrial waste conveyance, as well as culvert construction. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines pipe strength requirements and testing protocols to ensure reliable performance for infrastructure applications. ASTM C985-22 is strictly a manufacturing and purchase specification, focusing on the pipe itself rather than installation or field load conditions, which must be carefully managed by project owners and contractors for successful in-service performance.
ASTM C985-22 is broadly applicable in various public works and civil engineering projects requiring:
