SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 The composition of the oil included in rubber compounds has a large effect on the characteristics and uses of the compounds. The determination of the saturates, aromatics, and polar compounds is a key analysis of this composition. 5.2 The determination of the saturates, aromatics, and polar compounds and further analysis of the fractions produced is often used as a research method to aid understanding of oil effects in rubber and other uses. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers a procedure for classifying oil samples of initial boiling point of at least 260 °C (500 °F) into the hydrocarbon types of polar compounds, aromatics and saturates, and recovery of representative fractions of these types. This classification is used for specification purposes in rubber extender and processing oils. Note 1: See Test Method D2226. 1.2 This test method is not directly applicable to oils of greater than 0.1 % by mass pentane insolubles. Such oils can be analyzed after removal of these materials, but precision is degraded (see Appendix X1). 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific warning statements are given in 6.1, Section 7, A1.4.1, and A1.5.5. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2007-19(2024)e1 is the internationally recognized standard test method for determining characteristic groups-specifically saturates, aromatics, and polar compounds-in rubber extender and processing oils and other petroleum-derived oils using the clay-gel absorption chromatographic method. Established by ASTM International, this standard outlines a detailed procedure to classify petroleum-based oils with initial boiling points of at least 260°C (500°F) into critical hydrocarbon groups. The data generated by this method is instrumental for both quality specifications and research, influencing the selection, formulation, and processing of oils for use in rubber compounds and related applications.
Key Topics
-
Hydrocarbon Type Classification: The standard classifies oil samples into three principal hydrocarbon types:
- Saturates
- Aromatics
- Polar compounds
-
Clay-Gel Absorption Chromatography: The method employs a double column-one filled with clay and the other with silica gel plus clay-to effectively separate the hydrocarbon fractions based on their chemical characteristics.
-
Significance of Analysis: Determining the relative content of saturates, aromatics, and polar compounds helps predict the behavior of rubber-processing oils in formulation and application, directly influencing compound properties such as flexibility, durability, and compatibility.
-
Sample Suitability: The procedure is applicable to oils with less than 0.1% by mass pentane insolubles. Samples exceeding this limit require pre-treatment for accurate analysis.
-
Precision and Reporting: The standard provides specific guidance for laboratory precision (repeatability and reproducibility) and defines the mass percentage calculation for each hydrocarbon group. The methodology is based on globally harmonized standards, as acknowledged by the WTO TBT Committee.
Applications
-
Rubber Industry: Widely used for qualifying and controlling the composition of rubber extender and processing oils. The results guide manufacturers in matching oil properties with desired rubber performance characteristics-for example, optimizing flexibility, aging resistance, or processability of rubber goods.
-
Petroleum Products Research: The standard is a foundational tool in research laboratories aiming to understand the effects of oil composition in rubber compounding and product development.
-
Specification and Compliance: Frequently referenced in procurement and technical specifications to ensure that supplied oils meet required composition criteria, supporting both quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
-
Material Quality Control: Helps in monitoring batch-to-batch consistency of petroleum-derived oils, contributing to reliable end-product performance and process efficiency.
-
Other Industrial Uses: The method is also applicable to the analysis of heavy petroleum fractions and specialty oils where the classification of hydrocarbon groups is critical.
Related Standards
-
ASTM D2226: Classification for various types of petroleum oils for rubber compounding use. Relevant for understanding oil categories defined by compositional requirements.
-
ASTM D4175: Provides essential terminology relating to petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants.
-
ASTM D5309: Specification for high-purity cyclohexane, used as a solvent in chromatographic procedures.
-
ASTM E691: Practice for conducting interlaboratory studies to determine test method precision, underpinning the reliability of this test method.
