ABSTRACT This specification deals with the standards for unused round timber piles to be used either treated or untreated. This specification, however, does not cover preused piles unless the piles have the quality and design stresses equal to or greater than those prescribed herein. The piles shall be made of sound wood, free of decay, insect attacks, marine borer attack, and Limnoria damage. The piles shall also be cut above the ground swell and have a tapered tip. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the physical characteristics of unused round timber piles to be used either treated or untreated. 1.2 This specification is not intended for preused piles unless the piles have the quality specified by this specification and design stresses equal to or greater than those derived from Method D2899. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D25-12(2022) - Standard Specification for Round Timber Piles establishes guidelines for the selection, classification, and physical requirements of unused round timber piles used in construction. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures consistency and quality in the supply and application of both treated and untreated timber piles. It is widely referenced for infrastructure foundations, marine structures, and civil engineering projects where structural loads need to be transferred to subsoil strata.
By following ASTM D25-12(2022), engineers, architects, and specifiers can ensure round timber piles meet rigorous requirements for dimensions, straightness, durability, and overall soundness. This standard is recognized by agencies such as the U.S. Department of Defense and was developed in line with globally recognized standardization principles.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the applicability to unused round timber piles intended for structural uses, explicitly excluding reused piles unless they meet stringent criteria.
- Species of Wood: Covers all species with established clear wood strength values (per ASTM D2555).
- Classification: Specifies round timber piles by nominal circumference and length. Includes methods for sizing based on friction and end-bearing pile applications.
- Physical Requirements:
- Piles must be of sound wood, free from decay, insect or marine borer attack, and significant physical damage.
- Must be cut above ground swell with a consistent taper from butt to tip.
- Restrictions on defects such as knots, checks, shakes, splits, and grain twist to ensure durability and structural reliability.
- Peeling and Trimming: Outlines degrees of bark removal (clean-peeled, rough-peeled, unpeeled) and requirements for trimming knots and limbs.
- Dimensional Standards: Provides detailed tables for minimum butt and tip circumferences for common species, including Southern Yellow Pine and Coast Douglas Fir.
- Inspection and Quality Assurance: Specifies methods for assessing straightness, out-of-roundness, and other critical quality factors.
Applications
ASTM D25-12(2022) is widely used in numerous industries where foundation integrity is critical:
- Bridges and Trestles: Timber piles serve as foundational support for bridge structures, especially in railway and highway projects.
- Marine Construction: Used in the construction of docks, wharves, and piers due to their resilience in aquatic environments, provided proper treatment and species selection.
- Temporary and Permanent Foundations: Ideal for submerged foundations, cofferdams, and falsework in civil construction.
- Infrastructure Projects: Requisite for new installations of structural piles where load-bearing performance and material quality are essential.
By complying with the ASTM D25 round timber pile standard, stakeholders can specify, procure, and use timber piles with confidence in their expected service life and compliance with industry best practices.
Related Standards
To comprehensively address the selection and performance of round timber piles, reference is often made to additional ASTM standards:
- ASTM D9 - Terminology Relating to Wood and Wood-Based Products
- ASTM D2555 - Establishing Clear Wood Strength Values
- ASTM D2899 - Establishing Allowable Stresses for Round Timber Piles
Industry professionals are also encouraged to stay informed of regional and international guidance, such as the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) principles, to enhance compliance and market acceptance.
