ABSTRACT This specification covers polyethylene (PE) tubing pressure-rated for water. Included here are criteria for classifying PE plastic tubing materials and PE plastic tubing, and requirements and test methods for materials, workmanship, dimensions, bond strength, carbon black, density,.sustained pressure, hydrostatic burst pressure, and environmental stress cracking. Quality-assurance-passed products shall be marked accordingly as specified. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers polyethylene (PE) plastic tubing in outside diameters and SDR’s that are pressure rated for water. Included are requirements for PE compounds, and requirements and test methods for PE plastic tubing workmanship, dimensions, elevated temperature sustained pressure, burst pressure and marking. Note 1: Refer to specification AWWA C901 and PPI Technical Note 49 (TN-49) for further information on pipe suitability for potable water end use applications. Oxidative Resistance Classification (CC# rating) information is available from NSF International. 1.2 The text of this specification references notes, footnotes, and appendixes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes shall not be considered as requirements of the specification. Notes and footnotes in tables and figures, and Supplementary Requirements are requirements of the specification. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. Note 2: Joining PE plastic tubing with fittings that require flaring the tubing is not recommended because Practice D3140, the technique used to make the flare has been withdrawn (discontinued). 1.4 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 7, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D2737-22: Standard Specification for Polyethylene (PE) Plastic Tubing sets forth comprehensive requirements for polyethylene plastic tubing used in water service applications. Developed by ASTM International, this standard covers pressure-rated PE tubing in specified outside diameters and standard dimension ratios (SDRs). This document details minimum quality and performance metrics related to physical properties, material classifications, workmanship, dimensional tolerances, bond strength in multilayer constructions, carbon black content, density, and essential pressure performance tests. Adherence to this standard ensures reliable, long-lasting PE tubing suitable for potable water and related applications.
Key Topics
ASTM D2737-22 addresses a range of critical topics for manufacturers, specifiers, and installers of PE tubing:
- PE Compound Requirements: Tubing must be made from designated PE2708, PE3608, or PE4710 compounds, each meeting specified hydrostatic design stress and thermal stability metrics.
- Workmanship and Appearance: Tubing must be homogeneous and free from any visible defects, including cracks, holes, and inclusions, with uniform color and physical properties.
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Strict requirements detail maximum allowable variations in outside diameter, wall thickness, and out-of-roundness, ensuring product consistency and performance.
- Bond Strength and Multilayer Tubing: For co-extruded products, the bond between layers must be strong and uniform, preventing delamination.
- Color Coding and UV Stabilization: Adheres to the APWA Uniform Color Code for identification and requires UV stabilizers for compounds exposed to the elements, ensuring longevity in outdoor conditions.
- Health Effects and Certification: Tubing intended for potable water must conform to health-effect requirements such as NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard No. 61, ensuring material safety for drinking water applications.
Applications
Polyethylene plastic tubing manufactured to ASTM D2737-22 is commonly used across a broad range of water service and distribution systems:
- Potable Water Service: Used in municipal, residential, and industrial water delivery where durability, flexibility, and safety are essential.
- Reclaimed Water and Sewer Service: Proper color coding and material selection allow for use in non-potable and reclaimed water systems.
- Cold and Elevated Temperature Water Distribution: Rated for sustained pressure and burst resistance, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor water conveyance.
- Agricultural and Irrigation Systems: The flexibility and corrosion resistance of PE tubing make it ideal for irrigation infrastructure.
- Geothermal and Sensitive Applications: When NSF certification is met, tubing can be used in geothermal loops or sensitive environmental settings.
The standard’s strict pressure ratings and verification of oxidative resistance make it especially relevant for applications encountering disinfectants, such as chlorinated water in potable systems.
Related Standards
For additional guidance and complementary requirements, consider referencing the following related standards:
- AWWA C901: PE pressure pipe and tubing for water service
- NSF/ANSI/CAN 61: Drinking water system components – health effects

Practical Value
Conformance with ASTM D2737-22 ensures that polyethylene plastic tubing is manufactured to the highest quality and safety standards, supporting long service life and public health protection in water distribution systems. It provides clarity and confidence for water utilities, engineers, and contractors specifying or installing PE tubing for water infrastructure projects. By adhering to this standard, stakeholders can trust the tubing’s reliability, regulatory compliance, and suitability for the intended service conditions.
