SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the physical characteristics of round timber construction poles to be used either treated or untreated. 1.2 This test method covers basic principles for establishing recommended design stress values for round timber construction poles that are applicable to the quality described. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D3200-74(2022) is the internationally recognized standard specification and test method for establishing recommended design stresses for round timber construction poles. Developed by ASTM International, this standard outlines the physical characteristics required for both treated and untreated round timber poles, and establishes the underlying principles for determining their recommended design stress values. The standard plays a critical role in ensuring structural integrity, quality, and safety for timber poles used as key load-carrying components in a variety of construction applications.
Key Topics
-
Physical Characteristics: The standard specifies requirements for the dimensions and measurable attributes of round timber construction poles. It includes guidance on tip and butt circumference, referencing established tables for minimum values at various lengths to ensure consistent quality.
-
Design Stress Determination: ASTM D3200 outlines principles for establishing design stress values, referencing relevant ASTM practices, such as ASTM D2899, to define appropriate methods for calculating allowable stresses for poles based on their material properties and intended usage.
-
Treated vs. Untreated Poles: The specification applies to both treated and untreated timber poles, providing flexibility for users depending on environmental conditions, longevity, and intended application.
-
Standard Units and Conversions: All specifications are presented in inch-pound units, with corresponding SI unit conversions provided for informational purposes.
-
User Responsibilities: The standard underscores the need for users to address safety, health, and environmental practices, and to verify regulatory requirements prior to applying its methods or recommendations.
Applications
ASTM D3200-74(2022) is widely used in the construction and structural engineering industries where round timber poles are integral. Its applications include:
- Structural Supports: Timber poles designed and tested in accordance with this standard are commonly used as principle load-carrying members in buildings, bridges, towers, and other civil engineering structures.
- Utility Infrastructure: Round timber construction poles serve as supports for electrical, telecommunication, and lighting installations, benefitting from standardized design stress values to ensure reliability.
- Rural and Agricultural Buildings: Timber poles are often employed in barns, sheds, and fencing, where durability and load capacity are vital.
- Environmental Projects: Used in ecological restoration, landscaping, and erosion control structures where natural materials are preferred.
Utilization of this standard ensures that timber poles meet stringent industry requirements for strength, durability, and safety, reducing the risk of structural failure and promoting operational longevity.
Related Standards
Several ASTM standards are referenced or related to ASTM D3200-74(2022), supporting a comprehensive approach to timber construction:
- ASTM D25 - Specification for Round Timber Piles: Provides detailed requirements for timber piles, including physical characteristics and dimensions.
- ASTM D2899 - Practice for Establishing Allowable Stresses for Round Timber Piles: Outlines methodologies for determining allowable stresses, directly informing design values set forth in D3200.
- Other ASTM Standards on Timber Products: Related documents cover aspects such as wood preservation, grading, and performance evaluation.
Compliance with ASTM D3200-74(2022) and related standards ensures the optimal selection, specification, and application of round timber poles, thereby contributing to safer, cost-effective, and sustainable construction practices.
