SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This test method is useful for the determination of element concentrations in many natural waters. It has the capability for the simultaneous determination of up to 15 separate elements. High analysis sensitivity can be achieved for some elements, such as boron and vanadium. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of dissolved and total recoverable elements in water, which includes drinking water, lake water, river water, sea water, snow, and Type II reagent water by direct current plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (DCP). 1.2 The information on precision and bias may not apply to other waters. 1.3 This test method is applicable to the 15 elements listed in Annex A1 (Table A1.1) and covers the ranges in Table 1. 1.4 This test method is not applicable to brines unless the sample matrix can be matched or the sample can be diluted by a factor of 200 up to 500 and still maintain the analyte concentration above the detection limit. 1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4190-15(2023), Standard Test Method for Elements in Water by Direct-Current Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy is a key international standard developed by ASTM International for the determination of dissolved and total recoverable elements in water. This test method employs direct-current plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (DCP-AES), enabling the simultaneous quantification of up to 15 separate elements. Its broad applicability spans natural waters such as drinking water, lakes, rivers, sea water, snow, and laboratory reagent water (Type II water).
The method is especially valued for its sensitivity in detecting elements like boron and vanadium at trace levels. ASTM D4190-15(2023) is essential for laboratories conducting water quality analysis and environmental monitoring, ensuring accurate, standardized measurement results that are traceable and internationally recognized.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Covers determination of elements in drinking water, lakes, rivers, sea water, snow, and laboratory reagent water using DCP-AES.
- Element Coverage: Applicable for up to 15 elements, including aluminum, beryllium, boron, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, strontium, vanadium, and zinc.
- Sample Requirements: Applicable to both dissolved and total recoverable elements. Not suitable for brines unless extensive dilution is performed.
- Simultaneous Measurement: Allows for the concurrent detection of multiple elements in a single analysis.
- Precision and Sensitivity: Offers high analysis sensitivity for various metals, delivering reliable results when proper quality control is in place.
- Quality Control Procedures: Requires the use of certified reference materials, calibration verification, matrix spikes, and laboratory control samples to maintain data integrity.
- Safety and Compliance: Laboratories must follow appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices, and ensure compliance with regulatory limitations.
Applications
Environmental Monitoring
- Drinking Water Testing: Assesses compliance with regulatory standards by quantifying trace and heavy metals in public and private water supplies.
- Surface Water Assessment: Supports the monitoring of lakes, rivers, and sea water to track environmental pollution and metal contamination.
- Snow and Precipitation Analysis: Used in research and environmental surveillance to determine the deposition of elements from atmospheric sources.
Laboratory and Industrial Use
- Analytical Laboratories: Provides a standardized approach for laboratories to accurately quantify multiple elements in water samples using DCP-AES.
- Quality Assurance: Ensures that water used in industrial processes, pharmaceuticals, and other sensitive applications meets required purity standards.
Regulatory Compliance
- Supporting Regulation: Essential for laboratories tasked with meeting EPA, ISO, or other international water quality monitoring requirements, ensuring results are standardized, reproducible, and defensible.
- Reference Method: Acts as a benchmark for validating other analytical techniques involving the quantification of elements in aqueous matrices.
