SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1 This test method can be used to determine particle size distributions of catalysts and supports for materials specifications, manufacturing control, and research and development work. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the determination of particle size distribution of catalytic powder material using a sieving instrument and is one of several found valuable for the measurement of particle size. This test method is particularly suitable for particles in the 20 to 420 μm range. (See Terminology D3766.) 1.2 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.2.1 Exception—In 5.2, mesh size is the standard unit of measure. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D4513-22 is the standardized test method for determining the particle size distribution of catalytic materials by sieving. This method is widely used within the catalyst manufacturing, quality control, and research sectors to analyze powder-form catalysts and supports. The test is specifically designed for particle sizes ranging between 20 and 420 micrometres (µm), utilizing a series of sieves to fractionalize the sample and provide accurate measurement of particle size distribution.
Key Topics
- Particle Size Analysis: Provides a consistent approach to measuring the particle size distribution in catalytic powders, essential for material specification and performance evaluation.
- Sieving Instruments: Employs laboratory-grade automatic sieving equipment, with electroformed sieves recommended for optimal accuracy and durability.
- Sample Preparation:
- Ensures samples are free-flowing, homogeneous, and equilibrated at controlled humidity and temperature before testing.
- Utilizes sample splitters and proper riffling techniques to obtain representative sub-samples.
- Calibration and Standardization: Requires inspection and cleaning of all sieves prior to testing, with special attention to electroformed and woven-wire sieves for consistency.
- Measurement Procedure:
- Stacking sieves in declining mesh size and transferring a pre-weighed sample to the top sieve.
- Mechanical or automatic sieving continues until complete fractionation is achieved.
- Weighing each sieve post-analysis to calculate weight percent and cumulative percent passing.
- Data Presentation: Results reported as weight percentage for each sieve and as cumulative percentage passing, supporting graphical representation for median particle size determination.
- Precision and Bias:
- Includes guidelines for assessing repeatability and reproducibility across laboratories.
- References established terminology for discussing instrument bias and test accuracy.
Applications
The ASTM D4513-22 method is essential in various aspects of catalyst material handling and quality assurance:
- Materials Specification: Enables manufacturers and buyers to confirm that catalytic supports and powders meet required particle size distributions for proper performance.
- Manufacturing Control: Supports process optimization and monitoring by providing reliable size distribution data needed for troubleshooting and efficiency improvements.
- Research and Development: Aids in the development and evaluation of new catalyst materials by offering repeatable and standardized sizing methodology.
- Quality Assurance in Catalysis: Ensures that catalyst batches are consistent, reducing variability in catalytic reaction performance due to particle size differences.
- Regulatory Compliance: Facilitates adherence to international trade and safety requirements by conforming to globally recognized ASTM and WTO principles.
