SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This test method is used to determine if the GCL material meets specifications for mass per unit area at approximately 0 % moisture content, by oven drying. It can be used as an index test for quality control or quality assurance to determine specimen conformance. SCOPE 1.1 This test method covers the laboratory determination of the mass per unit area of a sample of a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL). The test method is also applicable to a multicomponent GCL. The dry mass of the clay can be found by simply subtracting the manufacturer's reported nominal mass of the geosynthetic component(s) from the total mass of the dry GCL. The moisture content of the GCL can also be determined by subtracting the initial total mass of the GCL from the total mass of the dry GCL. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. See Section 8 for specific precautionary statements. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D5993-18(2022), Standard Test Method for Measuring Mass per Unit Area of Geosynthetic Clay Liners, is an internationally recognized standard developed by ASTM International. This method provides a laboratory procedure to determine the mass per unit area of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs), including multicomponent GCLs, at approximately 0% moisture content via oven drying. The test is primarily used for quality control and assurance processes in the manufacturing and application of GCLs, ensuring that products meet specific mass requirements and project specifications.
Geosynthetic clay liners are crucial hydraulic barriers composed of clay bonded to synthetic materials. Proper measurement of mass per unit area is essential because it directly impacts liner performance, durability, and conformance to regulatory and construction guidelines.
Key Topics
-
Mass per Unit Area Determination This test method specifies the laboratory procedure for weighing oven-dried GCL specimens of known dimensions to obtain the mass per unit area. For multicomponent GCLs, the mass of the clay component is found by subtracting the manufacturer’s specified nominal mass of any synthetic component(s) from the total dry mass.
-
Moisture Content Measurement In addition to mass, ASTM D5993-18(2022) allows for determination of a GCL’s moisture content by comparing initial and post-drying masses. This provides valuable data for understanding product consistency.
-
Quality Control and Quality Assurance This standard serves as an index test, supporting quality control and assurance practices for GCL production, delivery, and installation. Results confirm material compliance with technical specifications.
-
Sample Preparation and Equipment Detailed guidance is provided on specimen selection, conditioning, cutting, and handling practices, as well as on the use of balances, ovens, and sample containers. Adherence to these requirements ensures test reliability and reproducibility.
-
Safety Considerations The standard includes important safety, health, and environmental precautions, emphasizing the proper handling of hot containers and adherence to equipment instructions, especially when using drying ovens or microwave ovens.
Applications
ASTM D5993-18(2022) is widely used in sectors where geosynthetic clay liners are implemented for environmental protection and containment applications. Key applications include:
-
Landfill Liners and Covers Ensuring proper clay mass in GCLs is critical for effective landfill containment systems, preventing leachate migration and environmental contamination.
-
Water Containment Projects Used in ponds, canals, and reservoir lining, GCLs require rigorous testing to validate their hydraulic barrier properties, for which mass per unit area is a key metric.
-
Civil and Environmental Engineering Quality assurance for infrastructure projects, such as tunnels, dams, and erosion control systems, depends on reliable GCL components tested according to this ASTM standard.
-
Manufacturing Quality Control GCL manufacturers rely on this test method to certify product consistency and conformance to customer and regulatory requirements.
