SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 5.1 This practice is designed for use on cannabis flower by cannabis producers, processors, dispensers, testing laboratories, and end users. aw testing at any point in the supply chain is an important element in ensuring the safety and quality of cannabis flower. Testing can occur spontaneously at any point in the supply chain by regulatory agencies, suppliers, and customers. 5.2 This practice is an important endpoint in determining whether a cannabis flower sample is being stored under optimal storage conditions (see Specification D8197). 5.3 Analysis of water activity should be considered an important quality control step in ensuring a cannabis flower sample is being stored under optimal storage conditions to prevent mold and/or other microbiological growth and/or breakage. 5.4 Maintaining the requisite aw throughout the supply chain from completion of drying through merchandising ensures safety and quality for the consumer. 5.5 Water activity is used in many cases as a critical control point for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) programs. Controlling aw should not be seen as a kill step.5 Rather control of aw focuses on preventing the growth and proliferation of microorganisms. 5.6 This practice is designed for use by trained technical individuals with minimal knowledge of complex analytical chemistry procedures. SCOPE 1.1 This practice covers the recommended procedure for determining the water activity (aw) of a cannabis flower sample. 1.2 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Water activity is a ratio, and thus is without unit designation. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM D8196-22: Standard Practice for Determination of Water Activity (aw) in Cannabis Flower is a key international standard developed by ASTM International. This practice specifies recommended procedures for accurately determining the water activity (aw) of cannabis flower throughout the supply chain. Maintaining proper water activity in cannabis products is vital to ensuring consumer safety, product quality, and regulatory compliance. This standard is designed for use by cannabis producers, processors, dispensaries, testing laboratories, and regulatory agencies, providing a critical tool for quality assurance and risk management in the cannabis industry.
Key Topics
- Water Activity (aw) Measurement: Water activity measures the availability of water for microbial growth, not just the total water content. It is a dimensionless ratio that directly influences the potential for mold, bacterial proliferation, and overall shelf-stability of cannabis flower.
- Quality and Safety Control: Accurate aw determination is an essential control point in quality assurance programs, including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) systems, preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms.
- Sampling and Handling Procedures: The standard outlines the proper techniques for sampling, handling, and preparing cannabis flower to achieve accurate and reliable water activity results.
- Instrument Requirements and Calibration: It provides specifications for water activity meters, including accuracy, calibration frequency, and environmental conditions for reliable measurement.
- Supply Chain Relevance: The practice supports quality control from post-harvest drying through distribution and merchandising, ensuring that water activity remains within acceptable ranges for optimal product safety and consumer satisfaction.
Applications
ASTM D8196-22 offers practical value for several stakeholders in the cannabis sector:
- Producers and Processors: Use aw testing as a quality control measure during drying, curing, and packaging to prevent product spoilage and maintain optimal storage conditions.
- Testing Laboratories: Implement standardized procedures for aw measurement to support compliance testing and ensure product integrity.
- Dispensaries and Retailers: Monitor aw levels in received product batches to validate storage conditions and guard against inadvertent microbial contamination.
- Regulatory Agencies: Utilize aw determination as a verification method for product safety, enabling spontaneous inspections and upholding industry standards.
- End Users: Benefit from improved product quality and safety, as aw monitoring helps inhibit mold and bacterial growth without compromising flower integrity.
Related Standards
Several standards complement ASTM D8196-22, supporting a comprehensive approach to cannabis safety and quality:
- ASTM D8197: Specification for Maintaining Acceptable Water Activity (aw) Range (0.55 to 0.65) for Dry Cannabis Flower Intended for Human/Animal Use - Provides target ranges for safe aw values.
- ASTM Committee D37: Oversees the development of standards related to cannabis, including processing, handling, and testing guidelines.
Practical Value
Implementing ASTM D8196-22 helps organizations:
- Mitigate the risk of mold and microbial contamination in cannabis flower.
- Enhance product shelf life and consumer trust through validated quality control.
- Achieve regulatory compliance by adopting widely-recognized aw testing procedures.
- Support best practices in storage, packaging, and distribution for all supply chain participants.
