ABSTRACT This guide deals with the selection of the appropriate leak testing method for either leak measurement or location for a particular system being tested (test system), which may consist either of open units or sealed units. The leak testing method may either be dynamic or static, with the dynamic test method requiring shorter time but lesser sensitivity as compared to static techniques. The choice of the appropriate leak testing method shall involve most importantly the optimization of the sensitivity, cost, and reliability of the test. In the case where various testing methods are available for a particular test system, each shall be examined separately and then ranked according to test system sensitivity. However, when determining the sensitivity, it is important to be able to differentiate the sensitivity associated with the instrument used to measure leakage from the sensitivity of the test system followed using the instrument. While the sensitivity of a specific test is dependent on the sensitivity of the instrument used, the choice of instrument and the test system are both influenced by the range of temperatures or pressures and the kinds of fluids involved. SCOPE 1.1 This guide2 is intended to assist in the selection of a leak testing method.3 Fig. 1 is supplied as a simplified guide. FIG. 1 Guide for Selection of Leakage Testing Method 1.2 The type of item to be tested or the test system and the method considered for either leak measurement or location are related in the order of increasing sensitivity. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM E432-91(2022): Standard Guide for Selection of a Leak Testing Method is a comprehensive reference developed by ASTM International to assist users in choosing the most suitable leak testing method for either leak measurement or location. The standard applies to a wide range of systems, including open units and hermetically sealed units, and covers both dynamic and static leak testing methods. The primary focus of this guide is to help users optimize sensitivity, cost, and reliability of leak testing procedures for their specific applications.
This standard aligns with internationally recognized principles outlined by the World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee, supporting global interoperability and compliance in leak testing practices.
Key Topics
- Selection Criteria: Guidance on evaluating available leak testing methods based on:
- Sensitivity required for the test
- Type of test system (open or sealed units)
- Cost considerations
- Reliability and practicality of each technique
- Types of Leak Testing Methods: Distinguishes between dynamic (faster, less sensitive) and static (slower, more sensitive) testing approaches.
- Instrument and Test System Sensitivity: Clarifies the distinction between the sensitivity of the instrument used and the overall sensitivity of the test system including all conditions.
- Environmental and Safety Considerations: Emphasizes the user’s responsibility to address safety, health, and environmental precautions and comply with applicable regulations.
- Test Method Hierarchy: Lists and ranks common leak testing methods by their sensitivity, including:
- Flow measurement
- Pressure measurement
- Bubble testing (immersion)
- Helium mass spectrometer detection
- Infrared analyzers
- Halogen detectors
- Radioactive tracer methods
Applications
ASTM E432-91(2022) is applicable across various industries where leak prevention is critical for safety, product quality, or environmental compliance, such as:
- Aerospace and Defense – Testing hermetically sealed electronic modules, fuel lines, and pressurized systems to ensure operational integrity.
- Electronics Manufacturing – Leak detection in vacuum tubes, semiconductors, and integrated circuit modules.
- Automotive and Transportation – Ensuring reliability of gas tanks, hydraulic lines, and air conditioning components.
- Industrial Equipment – Leak testing of pressure vessels, pipelines, and processing equipment in chemical or energy sectors.
- Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance – Supporting organizations in meeting industry and international leak testing requirements.
The standard assists users in selecting optimal test procedures, whether targeting the measurement of leak rates or pinpointing leak locations, for both prototype and mass-produced items.
Related Standards
- ASTM E1316 - Terminology for Nondestructive Examinations: Defines terms and vocabulary essential to leak testing.
- ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section V – Includes recommended practices that complement ASTM E432 for pressure vessels and boilers.
- ISO Leak Testing Standards – International guidelines for leak testing procedures and performance criteria, aligning with global regulatory expectations.
ASTM E432-91(2022) is an essential guide for engineers, quality assurance professionals, and manufacturers seeking best practices in leak testing method selection, enabling informed decisions to enhance product quality and safety while meeting regulatory standards. By referencing this standard, organizations benefit from a structured approach to identifying, measuring, and locating leaks in diverse systems with appropriate sensitivity and efficiency.
