ABSTRACT This specification covers the design, manufacturing, and testing of packed slip-type expansion joints used in pipelines for accommodating axial thermal growth or contraction from the pipeline carrying fluid. The expansion joints shall be of the following types, styles, classes, and forms: Type I; Styles I and II; Classes I and II; and Forms I, II, and III. As specified in this specification and as required, the expansion joint shall be provided with flanged or welded end connections, limit stops, stuffing boxes with integral guides, base, drain connection, service connection, slip protectors, and adjustment rods. The internal and external surfaces of the expansion joint shall be cleaned of dirt, oil, grease, and other foreign material using a suitable cleaning solvent. Extreme care shall be used to ensure the interior is free of any slag, steel chips, or other similar materials that could lodge between the slip and the body and score the slip surface. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the design, manufacturing, and testing of packed slip-type expansion joints used in pipelines for accommodating axial thermal growth or contraction from the pipeline carrying fluid. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F1007-18(2022) is the international standard specification for pipeline expansion joints of the packed slip type for marine application. Developed by ASTM Committee F25 on Ships and Marine Technology, this standard establishes requirements for the design, manufacture, and testing of expansion joints used to accommodate axial thermal growth and contraction in fluid-carrying pipelines on ships and marine structures. The standard ensures the reliability and safety of marine piping systems by outlining materials, construction details, and testing protocols for packed slip-type expansion joints.
Key Topics
- Types and Classes: The standard covers Type I, Styles I and II, Classes I and II, and Forms I, II, and III of packed slip-type pipeline expansion joints. These designations address different configurations to suit a range of marine piping layouts and operational needs.
- Design and Construction: Guidelines are provided for the design, including the use of flanged or welded end connections, stuffing boxes with integral guides, bases, drain and service connections, slip protectors, and adjustment rods.
- Materials: Construction materials must conform to ASTM and other referenced standards and be suitable for the intended marine environment, ensuring durability and corrosion resistance.
- Cleaning and Surface Preservation: Rigorous cleaning requirements must be met to ensure the interior and exterior surfaces are free from contaminants that may impair function or longevity.
- Testing and Quality Assurance: The specification details hydrostatic and nondestructive testing methods, visual inspections, and material certifications to assure product integrity.
Applications
This specification is essential in the marine industry for the installation and maintenance of pipelines aboard ships, offshore platforms, and related marine structures. Key practical applications include:
- Accommodating Thermal Expansion: Packed slip-type expansion joints absorb length changes caused by temperature fluctuations in marine pipelines, mitigating stress and potential damage.
- Vibration and Movement Compensation: These joints help absorb vibration and compensate for minor misalignments or movement, preserving pipe system integrity.
- Pressure and Fluid Handling: The expansion joints specified in ASTM F1007-18(2022) are suitable for a broad range of fluids, pressures, and temperature conditions typical in marine environments, including corrosive and high-pressure service.
End users, such as shipbuilders, marine engineers, piping contractors, and designers, rely on this standard for ensuring compliance, safety, and continued operational performance of marine pipeline systems.
