ABSTRACT This specification covers the performance requirements and corresponding test procedures for self-contained shipboard dehumidifiers that use hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors. The components of the dehumidifier, including the motor-compressor, condensing unit, dehumidifying coil, air-circulating fan, and accessories, shall all be enclosed within a metal cabinet. Dehumidifiers shall be evaluated by design capacity test, overload test, inclination test, and corrosion resistance test, and should operate satisfactorily as specified. Requirements for design documentation, schematic drawings, and manufacturer's manual are also considered. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers self-contained dehumidifiers using hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 11, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F1075-97(2023), published by ASTM International, specifies the requirements and testing procedures for shipboard, self-contained, mechanically refrigerated dehumidifiers utilizing hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors. This standard ensures that all key components-including the motor-compressor, condensing unit, dehumidifying coil, air-circulating fan, and accessories-are housed within a durable metal cabinet. The purpose of this standard is to ensure reliable dehumidification performance in challenging maritime environments, supporting vessel safety, equipment protection, and efficient moisture control.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
- Covers self-contained dehumidifiers designed for shipboard use
- Focuses on equipment with hermetic refrigerant motor-compressors
- Stipulates requirements using inch-pound units as standard
-
Design and Construction
- All components must be enclosed in a metal cabinet
- Requires the use of corrosion-resistant materials and finishes
- Units must be compatible with variable shipboard conditions, including vibration and shock
-
Performance and Testing
- Specifies design capacity, overload, inclination, and corrosion resistance tests
- Dehumidifiers must condense a minimum specified amount of water over 24 hours under defined conditions
- Units must operate correctly at varying temperatures and humidity levels, and under inclination
-
Documentation and Quality Assurance
- Mandates comprehensive design documentation, including master drawings and schematic diagrams
- Detailed requirements for manuals and installation guides
- Sampling and inspection processes are defined to assure quality conformance
-
Safety and Compliance
- Emphasizes adherence to safety standards (such as UL 474, UL 984, and ASHRAE 15)
- Requires proper labeling, packaging, and protection during shipment
Applications
Shipboard dehumidifiers conforming to ASTM F1075-97(2023) play a crucial role in:
-
Vessel Interior Protection: Preventing moisture buildup to protect sensitive equipment, cargo, and crew living spaces from corrosion, mold, and other humidity-related damage.
-
Naval and Commercial Ships: Ensuring reliability and safety in demanding marine environments, meeting specific military and commercial shipping requirements.
-
Retrofit and New Builds: Suited for both new vessel constructions and retrofitting into existing ships due to standardized dimensions and integration requirements.
-
Quality Assurance in Maritime Supply Chains: Supporting procurement and maintenance teams with clear specifications for selection, inspection, and ongoing care of dehumidifying equipment.
A well-installed, tested dehumidifier compliant with ASTM F1075-97(2023) ensures operational efficiency, longer equipment life, and optimal shipboard conditions.
