ABSTRACT This specification covers the physical requirements for aluminum alloy chain link fence fabrics used for commercial, industrial, and residential applications. These fabrics shall meet the specified requirements for weave form, size of mesh, size of wire, height of fabric, selvage, breaking strength, finish, and standard leangth of rolls. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers aluminum alloy chain link fence fabric for commercial, industrial, and residential uses. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Abstract
Overview
ASTM F1183-96(2022): Standard Specification for Aluminum Alloy Chain Link Fence Fabric is an internationally recognized standard established by ASTM. It details the physical requirements, quality criteria, and ordering information for aluminum alloy chain link fence fabric. Covering commercial, industrial, and residential applications, this specification supports the production and procurement of durable, reliable, and uniform aluminum chain link fencing. ASTM F1183 addresses the essential aspects of weave formation, mesh and wire dimensions, breaking strength, selvage, finish, and standard roll lengths, ensuring consistency and performance across projects.
Key Topics
Key aspects defined in ASTM F1183-96(2022) include:
- Material Requirements: Fabric must be produced from specific aluminum alloys, meeting designated standards for strength and finish.
- Weave and Mesh: The chain link fabric must have helical wires interwoven into a uniform diamond mesh without knots, except at the selvage.
- Wire and Mesh Size: The standard specifies acceptable wire diameters, mesh dimensions, and permissible tolerances for both.
- Selvage Types: Details the requirements for knuckling and twisting of wire ends, critical for finished edge safety and durability.
- Finish Options: Specifies mill finish as standard, with options for caustic-cleaned or etched finishes upon request.
- Breaking Strength: Establishes minimum wire tensile strengths to ensure adequate fence performance and longevity.
- Standard Roll Lengths: Ensures fabric is supplied in rolls of prescribed lengths with tolerances for commercial shipment and installation requirements.
- Inspection and Sampling: Describes procedures for sampling, quality inspection, and verification of fabric characteristics.
- Packaging and Marking: Outlines methods for labeling, packaging, and loading fence fabric rolls for shipment in compliance with relevant federal and military standards.
Applications
Aluminum alloy chain link fence fabric manufactured to ASTM F1183 is widely used in:
- Commercial Facilities: Perimeter security, property delineation, and controlled access fencing for businesses, warehouses, and parking lots.
- Industrial Sites: Provides robust security barriers and partitions in factories, utility plants, and construction zones.
- Residential Fencing: Used for property boundaries, pet enclosures, and garden fencing due to its corrosion-resistant and lightweight properties.
- Public Infrastructure: Encloses parks, sporting fields, playgrounds, and transportation infrastructure, where durability and uniformity are critical.
- Government and Military Installations: Delivers compliant fencing solutions subject to civil and defense contract specifications, including special marking and packaging requirements.
Related Standards
When specifying or purchasing aluminum alloy chain link fence fabric, consider the following related standards for comprehensive compliance and quality assurance:
- ASTM B211: Specification for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Bar, Rod, and Wire.
- ASTM A700: Guide for Packaging, Marking, and Loading Methods for Steel Products for Shipment.
- FED. STD. No. 123: Standard for civil agency shipment marking.
- MIL-STD-129: Standard for military shipment marking and storage.
- Other ASTM Chain Link Fence Standards: Refer to ASTM’s portfolio for additional chain link and fencing material standards applicable to specific environments or regulatory requirements.
ASTM F1183-96(2022) plays a crucial role in the chain link fencing industry, ensuring product reliability and harmonization of material expectations on a global scale. By adhering to this specification, manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users can achieve higher consistency, safety, and project efficiency while meeting the demands of diverse security and boundary applications.
