Standard Practice for Use of Branch Connections
Standard Practice for Use of Branch Connections
ABSTRACT This practice lists commonly used types of branch connections for carbon steel, chromium-molybdenum steel pipe and copper-nickel alloy tubing. The branch to run size applications are presented in details. The weld joint designs, fabricated branch connections and threaded fittings shall meet the requirements prescribed. SCOPE 1.1 This practice lists commonly used types of branch connections for carbon steel, chromium-molybdenum steel pipe and copper-nickel alloy tubing. Branch to run size applications are given in Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3. Other types of branch connections (Fig. 1) may be used provided they comply with the requirements of Title 46 CFR Subparts 56.07-10(f) and 56.70-15(g) of the USCG Regulations. FIG. 1 Illustrative Legend for Branch Connections 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
ASTM F681-82(2022) - Standard Practice for Use of Branch Connections provides comprehensive guidance on commonly used types of branch connections for carbon steel, chromium-molybdenum steel pipe, and copper-nickel alloy tubing. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures safe, consistent, and code-compliant fabrication and installation of branch connections in piping systems. It is recognized by regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, and aligns with internationally recognized principles for standardization.
Branch Connection Types The standard details a range of branch connection types suitable for various piping materials:
Branch-to-Run Size Applications Comprehensive tables offer detailed guidance for selecting appropriate branch connections based on pipe sizes and materials.
Connection Designs
Regulatory Compliance All branch connections must meet the requirements outlined in U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations (Title 46 CFR Subparts 56.07-10(f) and 56.70-15(g)) and referenced standards such as ASME B31.1.
Weld Joint and Fabrication Requirements
Measurement Units The standard exclusively employs inch-pound units for all specifications and tables.
The ASTM F681-82(2022) standard is critical for engineering, design, and maintenance in sectors requiring reliable pipe branch connections, including:
