IEC 61754-2: 2026 defines the standard interface dimensions for type BFOC/2,5 family of connectors. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1996. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) addition of Clause 2, Clause 3 and the Bibliography; b) addition of the active device receptacle interface type; c) revision of the ferrule grades to refer to the connector optical interfaces specified in the IEC 61755-3 series; d) revision of the ferrule end face geometry to refer to the connector optical interfaces specified in the IEC 61755‑3 series and IEC 63267‑3 series; e) improvement of the description of the characteristics of the resilient alignment sleeve for adaptor and rigid bore sleeve for active device receptacle; f) harmonisation of the dimensions of reference A for the rigid bore sleeve with other connector interface standards in IEC 61754 series.
Abstract
Overview
EN IEC 61754-2:2026 is an international standard specifying the interface dimensions for the type BFOC/2.5 fibre optic connector family. Published by CLC and derived from IEC 61754-2 (edition 2), this standard updates the previous 1996 edition and focuses on ensuring the interoperability and uniformity of fibre optic connectors used in telecommunication and data communication networks. By standardizing connector interfaces, EN IEC 61754-2:2026 facilitates reliable connections and simplifies the integration of components from different manufacturers.
Key Topics
- Connector Interface Definition: Establishes standard interface dimensions for the BFOC/2.5 connector family, which includes single position plugs with a 2.5 mm nominal ferrule diameter and bayonet coupling.
- Compatibility and Intermateability: Ensures compatibility between connectors, adaptors, and active device receptacles by stipulating standardized measurements and tolerances.
- Technical Revisions:
- Addition of new clauses for normative references, terms and definitions, and a comprehensive bibliography.
- Inclusion of the active device receptacle interface type for enhanced application versatility.
- Reference to standardized ferrule grades and end-face geometries, aligning with the IEC 61755-3 and IEC 63267-3 series.
- Refined guidance on the characteristics of the resilient alignment sleeve for adaptors and rigid bore sleeves for active device receptacles.
- Harmonization of key dimensions with other connector interface standards, improving system compatibility.
- Guidance for Manufacturers and Users: Provides dimensional tables, illustrative figures, and performance notes to support manufacturers in achieving compliance and customers in specifying reliable fibre optic interconnection solutions.
Applications
EN IEC 61754-2:2026 plays a crucial role in numerous applications where fibre optic connectivity is essential, including:
- Telecommunications: Ensures dependable and efficient optical connections for voice, video, and data transfer in both public and private networks.
- Enterprise Data Centers: Supports structured cabling systems by guaranteeing intermateability of patch cables, transceivers, and fibre optic equipment.
- Industrial Automation: Facilitates the integration of optical components in harsh environments by providing standardized connector solutions.
- Fiber to the Home (FTTH): Enhances user installation experience and reduces maintenance by utilizing standardized, easy-to-handle BFOC/2.5 connectors.
- Instrumentation and Measurement: Enables precise and repeatable connections for test and measurement devices reliant on fibre optic technology.
Adopting this standard assists organizations in minimizing deployment risks, reducing costs associated with non-standard connectors, and streamlining procurement and maintenance processes.
Related Standards
Organizations and professionals working with fibre optic connector interfaces should also consider the following related international standards for comprehensive compliance and interoperability:
- IEC 61754-1: Fibre optic connector interfaces - General and guidance.
- IEC 61755-3 Series: Connector optical interfaces – Connector parameters for dispersion unshifted single-mode physically contacting fibres.
- IEC 63267-3 Series: Connector optical interfaces for enhanced macro-bend multimode fibres.
- IEC 61300-3-22: Examination and measurement methods for ferrule compression force.
- IEC 61300-3-33: Procedures for measuring withdrawal force from a resilient alignment sleeve using pin gauges.
By implementing EN IEC 61754-2:2026 and referencing these related standards, organizations enhance the reliability, compatibility, and longevity of their fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
