This document provides requirements and recommendations for the design of field studies with soil invertebrates (e.g. for the monitoring of the quality of a soil as a habitat for organisms). It applies to all terrestrial biotopes inhabited by soil invertebrates, although this information can vary according to the national requirements or the climatic and regional conditions of the site to be sampled. NOTE While this document aims to be applicable globally, the existing information refers mostly to temperate regions. However, the (few) studies from other (tropical and boreal) regions, as well as theoretical considerations, allow the conclusion that the principles laid down in this document are generally valid.[1]],[[11]],[[12]],[[13]
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 23611-6:2026, titled "Soil quality - Sampling of soil invertebrates - Part 6: Design of sampling programmes with soil invertebrates," is an international standard developed by CEN and ISO. This document provides important requirements and recommendations for designing field studies involving soil invertebrates, aimed at monitoring and assessing soil as a habitat for various organisms. The guidance is applicable to all terrestrial biotopes where soil invertebrates occur and supports environmental professionals in creating scientifically-valid, reproducible, and practical sampling programmes.
By standardizing procedures across different climates, land uses, and regulatory contexts, EN ISO 23611-6:2026 facilitates consistent data collection essential for evaluating soil biological quality and environmental impacts.
Key Topics
-
Objectives of Sampling
- Site-specific risk assessment of contaminated land
- Evaluation of anthropogenic impacts (e.g., chemicals, infrastructure development)
- Classification and assessment of biological soil quality
- Long-term biogeographical monitoring for nature protection and ecological research
-
Study Design Considerations
- Selection of sampling locations, patterns, and timing based on study objectives
- Use of suitable organism groups and measurement endpoints
- Recognition of spatial and temporal variability in soil and organisms
- Practical constraints including field accessibility, safety, and sample representativeness
-
Sampling Programme Development
- Establishing clear objectives and required information for analysis
- Incorporating existing site information and historical data
- Planning exploratory and final sampling designs
- Addressing national requirements and local conditions
-
Reporting and Quality Assurance
- Clear, structured sampling reports
- Documentation of any deviations from standardized methods
- Implementation of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) practices
Applications
EN ISO 23611-6:2026 is directly relevant for:
- Environmental Monitoring and Research Standardizes monitoring of soil invertebrates for biodiversity assessments, soil health studies, and research on ecosystem processes.
- Contaminated Land Assessment Supports site-specific soil quality investigations and risk assessments for remediation projects.
- Ecological Impact Assessment Useful for evaluating the side effects of land use changes, agrochemical application, and infrastructure development on soil biota.
- Nature Conservation and Restoration Facilitates long-term biogeographical monitoring, underpinning restoration strategies and nature protection initiatives.
- Policy and Regulation Compliance Provides a framework for reproducible and reliable data collection, supporting regulatory requirements and environmental legislation.
Related Standards
For comprehensive biological and soil quality assessment, EN ISO 23611-6:2026 is often used alongside:
- ISO 23611 Parts 1–5: Detailed sampling and extraction methods for specific invertebrate groups (e.g., earthworms, nematodes, micro-arthropods)
- ISO 10381-1: General principles for soil sampling
- ISO 17616 & ISO 15799: Ecotoxicological characterization of soils
- ISO 18400 series: Procedures for selection, sampling strategies, safety, and handling of soil samples
Conclusion
Implementing EN ISO 23611-6:2026 ensures standardized and scientifically robust sampling programmes for soil invertebrates. By aligning field studies with international best practices, environmental professionals can confidently assess soil biological quality, meet regulatory requirements, and support sustainable land management and conservation efforts. Using this standard helps unify methodologies across projects, regions, and sectors, promoting consistency, data integrity, and informed decision-making in soil health monitoring and ecological risk assessment.
