IEC 60034-1:2017 is applicable to all rotating electrical machines except those covered by other IEC standards, for example, IEC 60349. Machines within the scope of this document may also be subject to superseding, modifying or additional requirements in other standards, for example, IEC 60079 and IEC 60092. This new edition contains a number of clarifications, corrections and enhancements with regard to the previous edition.

Performance and routine tests: Withstand voltage, short-circuit and overspeed considerations, momentary excess torque, pull-up torque, commutation tests, THD limits for synchronous machines, and short-circuit withstand tests.
Marking and documentation: Rating plates, required markings and tolerances for rated values.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and safety: Immunity and emission considerations for machines with or without electronic circuits or brushes; safety and protective earthing requirements.
Measurement methods and tolerances: Standardized procedures for test conditions, measurement methods and reporting.
