IEC 60034-2-1:2024 is intended to establish methods of determining efficiencies from tests, and also to specify methods of obtaining specific losses. This document applies to DC machines and to AC synchronous and induction machines of all sizes within the scope of IEC 60034-1 rated for mains operation. These methods may be applied to other types of machines such as rotary converters, AC commutator motors and single-phase induction motors. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition of IEC 60034-2-1 published in 2014. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Harmonization of layout and requirements with IEC 60034-2-2 and IEC 60034-2-3.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60034-2-1:2024 - "Rotating electrical machines - Part 2‑1: Standard methods for determining losses and efficiency from tests (excluding machines for traction vehicles)" - defines standardized test methods to measure losses and efficiency of rotating electrical machines. This third edition (2024) replaces the 2014 edition and harmonizes layout and requirements with IEC 60034-2-2 and IEC 60034-2-3. It applies to DC machines and AC synchronous and induction machines rated for mains operation within the scope of IEC 60034-1, and can be extended to other machine types (e.g., rotary converters, AC commutator motors, single‑phase induction motors).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Machines covered (DC, synchronous, induction) and exclusion of traction vehicles.
- Test philosophies: Direct and indirect efficiency determination, and preferred vs. field/routine test methods.
- Loss determination methods: Summation of separate losses, residual‑loss (additional load losses), assigned‑allowance approaches, equivalent‑circuit methods and the Eh‑star method.
- Back‑to‑back tests: Single‑supply and dual‑supply back‑to‑back arrangements for field or routine testing.
- Instrumentation & measurements: Mandatory requirements for electrical metering, torque measurement, speed/frequency sensing, excitation circuit monitoring and temperature measurement.
- Uncertainty and test conditions: Reporting uncertainty, reference temperature corrections, measurement of winding resistance and machine state (e.g., no‑load, full‑load, rotor removed).
- Test categories and reporting: Preferred methods for laboratory acceptance testing and alternate methods for routine/field tests; includes templates and annexes (e.g., Eh‑star calculation, slip measurement).
- Harmonization: Layout and terminology aligned with other IEC 60034‑2 series standards.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
- Motor and generator manufacturers use IEC 60034-2-1 for product development, type testing and certification of declared efficiency.
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies rely on the standard to produce comparable, auditable efficiency reports.
- OEMs, end users and procurement teams use test results to verify vendor claims and specify energy‑efficient motors.
- Utilities and energy auditors apply standardized loss/efficiency figures in lifecycle cost and energy‑saving calculations.
- R&D and quality assurance teams use the described methods (direct measurement, residual loss, Eh‑star, back‑to‑back) to validate designs and control production quality.
