IEC 60454-3-4:2007 contains the requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes made with cellulose paper, creped and non-creped, with rubber thermosetting adhesive. Materials, which conform to this specification, meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application, and not based on this specification alone. This third edition of IEC 60454-3-4 replaces the second edition, published in 1998, as well as IEC 60454-3-5, published in 1998. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with regard to the second edition is the consolidation of this part with IEC 60454-3-5. All requirements were confirmed. IEC 60454-3-5 is to be withdrawn at the time of this publication. Keywords: pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes made with cellulose paper, creped and non-creped, with rubber thermosetting adhesive
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60454-3-4:2007 is an international standard specifying quality and performance requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes designed for electrical applications. This third edition consolidates previous parts and focuses on tapes made from cellulose paper-both creped and non-creped types-combined with rubber thermosetting adhesive.
Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the standard ensures these adhesive tapes meet internationally recognized performance benchmarks, making them suitable for various electrical insulation, binding, and sealing tasks while offering reliable thermal and electrical properties.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Material Types IEC 60454-3-4 applies specifically to pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes using cellulose paper substrates with rubber thermosetting adhesive. It differentiates between:
- Type 1: Non-creped cellulose paper tape
- Type 2: Creped cellulose paper tape Both types hold a temperature endurance index of 105°C.
-
Performance Requirements The standard mandates properties including:
- Thickness tolerances (±0.025 mm or ±15–20%)
- Tape width and length specifications
- Electrical insulation resistance (minimum 5 × 10^6 Ω/25 mm width after humid conditions)
- Tensile strength: 50 N/10 mm for non-creped, 20 N/10 mm for creped tapes
- Elongation at break and adhesion to steel standards
- Electric strength thresholds (8 kV/mm minimum for Type 1; 5 kV/mm for Type 2)
- Resistance to thermal ageing and flagging (adhesive edge lifting)
-
Test Methods All testing follows procedures outlined in IEC 60454-2, covering:
- Electrical and mechanical test methods
- Thermal endurance tests conducted at elevated temperatures of 120 °C, 140 °C, and 160 °C to verify insulation and mass loss criteria
-
Marking and Packaging Marking, labelling, and packaging requirements comply with general guidelines from IEC 60454-1, ensuring traceability and user information clarity.
Applications
-
Electrical Insulation These tapes are widely used for insulating electrical wires, cables, and components, providing essential dielectric strength and mechanical protection.
-
Cable Wrapping and Harnessing Creped types offer flexibility and conformability, ideal for bundling wiring harnesses in electrical equipment and appliances.
-
Thermal and Mechanical Protection Rubber thermosetting adhesive provides stable adhesion in varied thermal conditions, suitable for equipment exposed to moderate heat.
-
General Electrical Maintenance and Repair Their pressure-sensitive nature allows for quick, reliable application on-site for repairs, splices, and overlays.
Selecting tape type and verifying performance according to IEC 60454-3-4 is critical to ensure electrical safety, insulation integrity, and long-term reliability in industrial, commercial, and residential applications.
