IEC 60644:2009 applies primarily to fuse-links used with motors started direct-on-line on alternating current systems of 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Standardizes time-current characteristics to formulate additional pulse withstand requirements regarding testing and to give guidance for the selection of fuse-links to be used with motors. Note: Fuse-links according to this specification should comply with the requirements of IEC 60282-1. The main changes with regard to the previous edition concern the following: - update of the normative references; - renewal of the figures.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60644:2009 sets out the specification for high-voltage fuse-links designed for motor circuit applications, principally where motors are started direct-on-line in AC systems operating at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The standard provides requirements for time-current characteristics and pulse withstand capabilities, aimed at ensuring reliable protection and coordination within motor circuits. It is primarily intended for fuse-links complying with IEC 60282-1 and offers essential guidance for the selection and testing of fuse-links used in conjunction with electric motors.
This edition consolidates the 2009 release and its 2019 amendments, which feature updated normative references and revised figures for enhanced clarity and usability.
Key Topics
- Time-Current Characteristics: Defines standardized pre-arcing time-current curves, ensuring fuse-links provide reliable protection while withstanding high inrush currents associated with motor starting.
- Pulse Withstand Requirements: Specifies test sequences that simulate abnormal and normal service conditions-100 cycles for commissioning scenarios and 2,000 cycles for operational life.
- K Factor: Describes the use of a K factor to define the overload threshold, indicating how much cyclic overload the fuse-link can tolerate without deterioration.
- Selection Guidance: Offers guidelines on selecting correctly rated fuse-links based on both system parameters (e.g., voltage, breaking current) and motor characteristics (e.g., starting and running current).
- Coordination with Circuit Components: Guidance for proper coordination with other components such as relays, contactors, and cables to ensure comprehensive circuit protection.
Applications
IEC 60644:2009 is important in applications where motors are started directly online and experience high starting currents. Typical sectors include:
- Industrial Motor Control: Ensures that motors used in manufacturing, processing, or utilities are adequately protected against overloads and faults while avoiding nuisance tripping during start-up.
- HVAC and Pumping Stations: Applies to high-voltage motors in large ventilation, pumping, and compressor systems where reliable start-up and overload protection are critical.
- Utility and Infrastructure Projects: Used in substations, water treatment facilities, or any infrastructure utilizing high-voltage motors requiring robust short-circuit and overload protection.
- Switchgear and Panel Design: Enables equipment manufacturers and designers to specify fuses that meet the endurance requirements of frequent motor starts and stops.
By following IEC 60644, organizations can enhance system safety, increase equipment lifespan, and reduce downtime due to premature fuse failure or improper coordination.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive approach to fuse-link and motor circuit protection, consider the following related international standards:

Practical Value
Adhering to IEC 60644:2009 ensures that high-voltage fuse-links for motor circuits are tested for realistic duty conditions, withstand frequent motor starting, and coordinate effectively with other equipment. This reduces the risk of equipment damage, enhances safety, and assures compliance with global best practices for electrical protection systems. When selecting and specifying fuse-links for high-voltage motor applications, referencing IEC 60644 is essential for engineers, specifiers, and manufacturers aiming for robust and reliable electrical installations.
