IEC 60794‑1:2026 describes test procedures used to establish uniform requirements for optical fibre cables for the environmental property - underwater cable resistance to hydrostatic pressure. This document applies to optical fibre cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. See IEC 60794‑1‑2 for a reference guide to test methods of all types and for general requirements. This first edition cancels and replaces Method F10 of the second edition of IEC 60794‑1‑22 published in 2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) modification of original method F10 which becomes F10A with modification of the detailed content of apparatus, procedure and details to be specified and addition of set-up; b) addition of two test methods F10B and F10C to cover the different test object and procedure.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-210:2026 specifies standardized test procedures to assess the resistance of optical fibre cables to hydrostatic pressure in underwater environments. Issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this document outlines requirements for cables utilized in telecommunications and in devices employing similar data transmission techniques. Applicable to both pure optical fibre cables and hybrid cables that include electrical conductors, this standard ensures reliable cable performance and durability when subjected to challenging underwater conditions.
Key Topics
- Hydrostatic Pressure Resistance: The core of IEC 60794-1-210:2026 is the definition of test methods designed to evaluate the underwater resilience of optical fibre cables against hydrostatic pressure.
- Test Methods: The standard details three distinct test procedures, now designated as Method F10A (radial pressure), F10B (longitudinal pressure with open/closed ends, split into two variations), and F10C (longitudinal pressure through compartments), supporting a range of real-world failure and installation scenarios.
- Apparatus and Sample Requirements: Specific guidance is provided on the setup of pressure vessels, measurement apparatus, water types, detection devices, and sample installation to enable uniform and repeatable results.
- Performance Evaluation: Each method incorporates objective criteria, such as no significant attenuation changes, limited water penetration, and maximum allowable leakage, aligned with user specifications.
Applications
IEC 60794-1-210:2026 plays a critical role in:
- Submarine and Underwater Cable Deployment: Essential for manufacturers and operators of fibre optic cables that are installed in rivers, lakes, seas, or across underwater infrastructure, ensuring cables maintain integrity under operational depth pressures.
- Telecommunication Infrastructure: Guarantees that cables used with telecommunication systems meet minimum durability standards, minimizing service interruptions due to water ingress or mechanical failure.
- Hybrid Cable Assessment: Applicable to cable designs combining optical fibres and electrical conductors, particularly in remote or submerged sensor systems and power/data transmission applications.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance: Facilitates rigorous verification for vendors, testers, and certifying bodies seeking to certify cable products for underwater use based on international benchmarks.

- IEC 60794-1-1: Provides overarching terminology and fundamental concepts related to optical fibre cables.
- IEC 60793-1-46: Relevant for optical attenuation measurement techniques used in cable testing.
- IEC 60794-1-22:2017: The previous edition encompassing environmental test methods, now partially superseded by IEC 60794-1-210:2026.
- ITU-T G.976:2014: Contains comparable test methods for submarine cable systems, referenced for procedural alignment.
Practical Value
Implementing IEC 60794-1-210:2026 ensures:
- Uniform testing and reporting, encouraging industry-wide comparability and supplier transparency for underwater cable projects.
- Risk reduction by verifying cable performance against pressure-induced failures, directly impacting network uptime and maintenance costs.
- Easy integration with existing compliance processes for telecommunication and underwater cable system providers.
- Alignment with global best practices, enhancing project credibility and simplifying regulatory acceptance across markets.
Conclusion
IEC 60794-1-210:2026 establishes critical, updated procedures for evaluating the underwater resistance of optical fibre cables to hydrostatic pressure. By defining clear test protocols and objective criteria, it supports safer, more reliable telecommunication and data transmission infrastructures in demanding aquatic environments.
