Overview
IEC 60794-2-30:2008 is an IEC family specification for optical fibre ribbon cables for indoor use. Intended for manufacturers, installers and specifiers, this second edition (2008) updates the 2003 edition and defines construction, test and performance requirements specific to ribbon-structured indoor cables. It is intended to be read together with IEC 60794-1-1, IEC 60794-1-2 and the sectional specification IEC 60794-2.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and lifetime: Cables are designed for a predicted operating lifetime of at least 15 years; installed attenuation must meet customer-supplier agreement.
- Construction rules: Defines ribbon structure, sheath, strength/anti-buckling members, ripcord and fibre identification requirements. No fibre buffer or ruggedized fibre is assumed for this family specification.
- Fibre types: Supports multimode and single-mode fibres compliant with IEC 60793-2. Transmission requirements are detailed by fibre category (e.g., B1.1, B2, B4, B5 and multimode classes).
- Dimensions and geometry: Ribbon and cable geometric parameters and dimensional checks are specified to ensure compatibility with connectors, splicing and routing hardware.
- Mechanical tests: Prescribes tests and requirements for tensile performance, crush, impact, bending, repeated bending, bending under tension, low-temperature bending, flexing, torsion and kink behaviour.
- Environmental tests: Includes temperature cycling regimes and other environmental performance verifications.
- Fire performance: Requires appropriate fire performance characteristics for indoor use (see standard for applicable test methods and limits).
- Documentation and annexes:
- Annex A: informative example of cable construction (cross-section).
- Annex B: blank detail specification template including MICE classification and requirements for industrial premises.
- Bibliography added to support normative references.
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC 60794-2-30 is directly applicable to:
- Cable manufacturers developing optical fibre ribbon cables for indoor installations (data centres, central offices, risers, campus buildings).
- System integrators and installers specifying indoor ribbon cable performance for high-density backbone and distribution links.
- Specification writers and procurement teams requiring consistent acceptance tests, dimensional compatibility and transmission criteria.
- Certification and test labs performing standardized mechanical, environmental and optical performance testing.
Practical benefits include predictable long-term attenuation, assured mechanical robustness for indoor routing and uniform fibre identification for splicing and connectorization workflows.
