Abstract

Overview

IEC 61029-2-10:1998 is the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) used primarily for cutting metal. It is a Part 2 (particular requirements) document to be used in conjunction with IEC 61029-1 and covers cutting‑off grinders that use a plain abrasive cutting‑off wheel with a diameter up to and a rated peripheral speed not exceeding .

- Guards are subject to burst containment tests (wheel burst simulated by a projectile or equivalent). After bursting three wheels in the same guard, the guard must remain attached, effective and show no visible cracks (non‑destructive crack detection such as dye penetration or magnetic methods).
- Thickness, material and construction requirements for guards and flanges are specified to resist wheel failure and ejection of fragments.
User safety instructions: Mandatory guidance includes wearing protective eyewear, not using damaged wheels or operating without guards, and using only wheels recommended by the manufacturer with marked speeds equal or greater than the machine rating.
Additional technical clauses: Requirements align with general clauses in IEC 61029-1 covering electrical protection, insulation, wiring, components, and endurance tests.
