Gives the definitions, classification and general requirements for electrical insulating materials suitable for application as coatings for loaded printed wire boards (conformal coatings). This standard excludes requirements for compatibility between such coatings and printed wire boards, this characteristic being evaluated in individual applications. Surface modifiers are not classified as conformal coatings. They only provide a thin film that does not cure and has low mar resistance. They are excluded from this standard. Materials which conform to this standard meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this standard alone. This edition includes the following significant technical changes from the previous edition: a) a Class 3 material for aerospace applications has been included; b) a new resin type (oligomeric blend material) has been added.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61086-1:2004 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the definitions, classification, and general requirements for coatings applied to loaded printed wire boards (PWBs), commonly known as conformal coatings. These coatings serve as electrical insulating materials designed to protect printed circuit boards (PCBs) from environmental damage such as moisture, dust, and chemicals.
This 2004 edition is the second edition of the standard, which revises the original 1992 release. It introduces significant updates including the addition of a Class 3 material specifically for aerospace applications and a new oligomeric blend resin type, reflecting advancements in coating technologies and expanding application possibilities.
Key Topics
-
Conformal Coatings Definition: A conformal coating is an insulating material applied as a thin, uniform layer that conforms to the surface profile of a loaded printed wire board, providing environmental protection.
-
Exclusions: The standard excludes surface modifiers - thin, non-curing films with low mar resistance - as these do not fulfill the protective performance criteria typical of conformal coatings.
-
Classification System: Coatings are classified using a code that includes:
- A numerical part indicating material classification,
- Letters representing the resin type,
- And numeric suffixes denoting variations within each resin type.
-
Material Requirements: The standard specifies performance levels for materials suitable as conformal coatings but emphasizes that users must select coatings based on the specific performance criteria required for their individual applications, rather than relying solely on compliance with the standard.
-
Scope Limitations: Compatibility testing between coatings and specific printed wire boards is excluded from the standard and is left for evaluation per application.
Applications
IEC 61086-1:2004 is essential for industries and professionals involved in printed circuit board manufacturing and assembly, especially where environmental protection and electrical insulation are critical. Key application areas include:
-
Electronics Industry: Protecting PCBs in consumer electronics from moisture, dust ingress, and chemical contaminants.
-
Aerospace and Defense: The inclusion of Class 3 materials supports the stringent demands for reliability and durability in aerospace electronics exposed to harsh environments.
-
Automotive Electronics: Enhancing the longevity and performance of circuit boards subjected to temperature fluctuations and vibrations.
-
Industrial Controls and Instrumentation: Ensuring circuit boards function reliably in challenging industrial environments.
By adhering to IEC 61086-1, manufacturers can select coatings that meet international quality benchmarks, improve product durability, and reduce failures caused by environmental factors.
Related Standards
IEC 61086-1:2004 is part of a comprehensive series on coatings for loaded printed wire boards:
- IEC 61086-2: Methods of Tests - Specifies testing methods for evaluating coating materials.
- IEC 61086-3: Specifications for Individual Materials - Defines detailed specifications for particular conformal coating materials.
