Overview
IEC 61212-2:2006 – "Insulating materials - Industrial rigid round laminated tubes and rods based on thermosetting resins for electrical purposes - Part 2: Methods of test" defines the test methods used to assess laminated thermosetting resin tubes and rods intended for electrical applications. It forms Part 2 of the IEC 61212 series and applies to the materials defined in IEC 61212-1. The standard establishes conditioning, dimensional checks, mechanical, electrical and other material tests so manufacturers, test labs and specifiers can verify conformance to performance levels. Note: selection for a specific application should be based on actual application requirements, not on this specification alone.
Key topics
- Scope & safety: Tests apply to industrial rigid round laminated tubes and rods based on thermosetting resins; includes safety and application-use statements and a user responsibility warning.
- Conditioning: Standard atmosphere B (23 °C ±2 K, 50% ±5% RH) for at least 24 hours before most tests; elevated-temperature conditioning where required.
- Dimensions & measurement: Procedures and tolerances for external/internal diameter, wall thickness and straightness using micrometers, vernier calipers or tapes.
- Mechanical tests:
- Flexural strength perpendicular to laminations
- Axial compressive strength
- Cohesion between layers (delamination testing)
- Electrical tests:
- Electric strength and breakdown voltage (power-frequency methods)
- Insulation resistance after immersion in water
- Dissipation factor and permittivity (tube only)
- Other tests:
- Thermal endurance (ageing procedures and evaluation)
- Water absorption
- Density
- Flammability (50 W flame tests referenced)
- Normative references: Cross-references to IEC and ISO test methods (for example IEC 60243-1, IEC 60216-1/2, IEC 60212, ISO 62, ISO 178, ISO 604).
Applications
- Product qualification and acceptance testing for manufacturers of laminated insulating tubes and rods.
- Quality assurance and incoming inspection in electrical equipment production (rotating machines, switchgear supports, bushings, insulators).
- R&D and materials comparison to evaluate mechanical, electrical and thermal performance of thermosetting laminates.
- Failure analysis and safety verification after exposure to environmental or electrical stresses.
Who should use it
- Manufacturers of insulating tubes/rods and composite laminates
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies
- Design and electrical engineers specifying insulating components
- Procurement and QA teams assessing material conformity
