Specifies requirements for visual, acoustic and tactile methods of indicating safety-related information, at the human-machine interface and to exposed persons. It specifies a system of colours, safety signs, markings and other warnings, intended for use in the indication of hazardous situations and health hazards and for meeting certain emergencies. It also specifies ways of coding visual, acoustic and tactile signals for indicators and actuators to facilitate the safe use and monitoring of the machinery. It includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: Adapted to the basic standards IEC 60073, IEC 60417, ISO 3864-1, ISO 7000 and ISO 7010
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61310-1:2007, titled Safety of Machinery - Indication, Marking and Actuation - Part 1: Requirements for Visual, Acoustic and Tactile Signals, is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This document establishes essential requirements for safety-related signalling at the human-machine interface and to persons exposed to machinery. It focuses on the methods and systems used for visual, acoustic, and tactile signals to effectively communicate hazardous situations, health risks, and emergency conditions.
This standard ensures harmonized use of colours, safety signs, markings, and other warnings which are critical for maintaining workplace safety and facilitating the safe use and monitoring of machinery. The 2007 edition includes updates aligning with other key international standards such as IEC 60073, IEC 60417, ISO 3864-1, ISO 7000, and ISO 7010, reflecting the most current safety practices.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application Covers requirements for signalling methods to indicate safety-related information, making it applicable to various types of machinery and industrial environments.
-
Visual Signals Defines principles for colour coding, signal presentation, and graphical symbols to ensure clear, universally understood visual communication of machine status and hazards.
-
Acoustic Signals Specifies characteristics and coding for audible warnings and alerts, facilitating immediate recognition and response to unsafe or emergency conditions.
-
Tactile Signals Addresses the use of touch-based signals, enabling communication where visual or acoustic signals may be ineffective, such as for visually impaired operators or in noisy environments.
-
Information Coding Details methods to standardize the coding of signals-visual, acoustic, and tactile-to promote consistency and reduce ambiguity in signal interpretation.
-
Safety-Related Symbols Supplementary annexes detail graphical symbols related to the operation of actuators and controls, improving user interaction and safety compliance.
Applications
IEC 61310-1:2007 is essential for manufacturers, safety engineers, and compliance officers involved in the design, implementation, and maintenance of machinery and industrial equipment. Its practical applications include:
- Designing machine interfaces to safely alert operators and bystanders to hazards and operational statuses.
- Implementing standardized safety signals that conform to international regulations, enhancing global machinery interoperability.
- Developing user-friendly warning systems that improve response times during emergencies.
- Facilitating inclusive safety communication for all users, including those with visual or auditory impairments.
- Supporting risk assessment and mitigation strategies in industrial automation, manufacturing plants, and heavy machinery sectors.
By adhering to this standard, organizations can enhance operator safety, reduce machinery-related incidents, and comply with worldwide safety regulations, fostering safer industrial environments.
Related Standards
IEC 61310-1:2007 is closely related to several foundational standards that govern safety signalling and graphical symbols, including:
- IEC 60073 – Basic and safety principles for man-machine interface, marking and identification.
- IEC 60417 – Graphical symbols for use on equipment.
