IEC 61347-2-11:2024 specifies safety requirements for miscellaneous electronic circuits used with luminaires for use on DC supplies up to 1 500 V or on AC supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2001 and Amendment 1: 2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) alignment with respect to the fourth edition of IEC 61347-1: - introduction of dated references to the fourth edition of IEC 61347-1 as appropriate; - deletion of clauses and subclauses which are either no longer relevant or now covered in IEC 61347-1; b) scope extension to 1 500 V for direct current; c) scope clarification; d) revision of information and marking requirements; e) addition of requirements for the determination of the output working voltage (new Clause 17).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61347-2-11:2024 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies safety requirements for miscellaneous electronic circuits used with luminaires. These circuits operate on DC supplies up to 1500 V or AC supplies up to 1000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. As the second edition, issued in June 2024, it replaces the first edition from 2001 and its 2017 amendment, introducing significant technical revisions to enhance safety and harmonize requirements with related standards.
This standard primarily focuses on the safety aspects of electronic control circuits integrated into lighting fixtures, addressing issues such as insulation, marking, terminal requirements, earthing, and output working voltage determination. It complements the general safety requirements covered in IEC 61347-1:2024 and is intended to be used alongside it to ensure comprehensive safety for luminaires’ electronic controlgear.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application Specifies safety criteria for various miscellaneous electronic circuits including:
- Electronic controlgear circuits (e.g., compliant with IEC 62386 series, IEC 63128, or IEC 62756-1)
- Daylight and presence sensor circuits
- EMC assistance circuits
- Devices handling intermittence and earth leakage
- Other miscellaneous electronics within TC 34 scope not covered by another TC 34 standard.
-
Safety and Marking Requirements
- Mandatory markings for durability and legibility to ensure clear identification
- Clear information provision about the circuits, operational limits, and warnings
-
Electrical Insulation and Protection
- Protection against accidental contact with live parts
- Insulation resistance and dielectric strength tests
- Requirements for creepage distances and clearances to prevent electrical breakdown
-
Output Working Voltage
- Newly introduced Clause 17 defines methods to determine and verify the output working voltage, essential for user safety and conformity assessment.
-
Scope Expansion
- Extension to DC supply voltages up to 1500 V to address modern lighting system needs, particularly in DC-driven applications.
-
Harmonization with IEC 61347-1:2024
- Updated to align with the fourth edition of IEC 61347-1 for consistent application of general safety requirements
- Removal of clauses that are now incorporated in IEC 61347-1, reducing redundancy.
Applications
This standard applies to a wide variety of electronic components and circuits used in luminaires, ensuring their safety in both residential and commercial lighting systems. Typical applications include:
- Electronic Controlgear: Controls for LED drivers, dimmers, and electronic ballasts that regulate light output safely and efficiently
- Sensor Integration: Circuits connected to daylight harvesting and occupancy sensors for energy-saving automatic lighting control
- Protective Devices: Components like earth leakage and open-circuit protective circuits commonly used with neon and other specialty lighting transformers
- EMC Performance Circuits: Electronic modules designed to reduce electromagnetic interference and improve compatibility in lighting networks
- Lighting Chains and Decorative Lighting: Circuits managing the intermittent operation of connected lighting elements for safety and longevity
Manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory authorities use IEC 61347-2-11:2024 to verify that electronic circuits in luminaires meet high safety standards during design, production, and certification.
