IEC 61558-2-15:2011 deals with safety aspects of isolating transformers for the supply of medical locations. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1999. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes consist of updating this part in accordance with IEC 61558-1:2005. This part has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104:2010. The preparation of safety publications and the use of basic safety publications and group safety publications. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 12 months from the date of publication. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 61558-1:2005.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61558-2-15:2011 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular safety requirements and tests for isolating transformers used in medical locations. This second edition updates and replaces the first edition from 1999, aligning with the updated IEC 61558-1:2005 standard. The standard focuses on the electrical, thermal, and mechanical safety of isolating transformers designed specifically to supply power to medical IT systems in medical environments classified as group 2 locations.
Isolating transformers covered by this standard are typically stationary, air-cooled (dry-type) units for single-phase or three-phase supply systems, designed to be permanently connected to fixed wiring and to form the medical IT power system on their secondary side. The rated output power ranges from 0.5 kVA to 10 kVA (extendable by agreement), and voltage ratings do not exceed 1,000 V AC supply or 250 V AC phase-to-phase output.
Key Topics
-
Safety Requirements: IEC 61558-2-15 emphasizes stringent safety criteria to ensure protection against electric shock, overheating, mechanical damage, and ingress of dust or moisture, which are critical in sensitive medical environments.
-
Electrical Safety Tests: The standard specifies isolation resistance, dielectric strength tests, leakage current measurements, and testing for short-circuit and overload conditions, ensuring transformers maintain insulation integrity.
-
Thermal and Mechanical Tests: It defines heating limits under load that prevent excess temperature rise, alongside mechanical strength assessments to ensure robust construction suitable for medical settings.
-
Marking and Documentation: Clear guidelines for marking transformers, including identification, electrical ratings, and safety instructions, are established to assist manufacturers, installers, and maintenance personnel.
-
Compliance and Implementation: The document recommends a transitional period of 12 months for manufacturers and testing bodies to adopt new or revised requirements and update their testing procedures following publication.
-
Scope Limitations: The standard excludes power supply units and transformers supplying distribution networks. It is intended for use with IEC 61558-1:2005 and refers to other relevant standards such as IEC 60364-1 and IEC 60364-7-710 regarding medical IT systems and installations.
Applications
IEC 61558-2-15:2011 applies primarily to isolating transformers used in:
-
Medical IT Systems: Supplying medically safe electrical power for equipment in medical locations, particularly group 2 medical environments where patient safety demands high isolation standards.
-
Hospitals and Clinics: Where transformers are part of the fixed electrical infrastructure supporting diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring equipment sensitive to electrical interference and requiring reliable isolation.
-
Health Care Facilities Compliance: Helps manufacturers design transformers that conform to international safety standards, facilitating regulatory approval and ensuring patient and operator safety.
-
Medical Equipment Manufacturers: Provides guidelines for transformer design ensuring safe, interference-free power supply in medical applications.
Related Standards
-
IEC 61558-1:2005: General safety requirements for transformers, reactors, and power supply units which IEC 61558-2-15 supplements with medical-specific provisions.
-
IEC 60364-1: Fundamental principles and definitions regarding electrical installations, including IT power systems within medical locations.
-
IEC 60364-7-710: Installation rules and requirements specifically for medical locations and medical IT systems, complementing IEC 61558-2-15.
-
