Overview
IEC 61784-3-1:2010 - Industrial communication networks - Profiles - Part 3-1: Functional safety fieldbuses - Additional specifications for CPF 1 - defines a safety communication layer (services and protocol) based on CPF 1 from IEC 61784‑1 and IEC 61158 Types 1 and 9. Edition 2.0 (2010) is a technical revision of the 2007 edition and specifies principles, message formats and runtime constraints for safety-related communication over FOUNDATION Fieldbus™ SIS (FSCP 1/1) and other CPF 1 implementations.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Safety communication layer: Defines the services, protocol elements and PDU formats used to carry safety data over a “black channel” transport.
- Black channel principles: Mechanisms to treat the underlying network as untrusted and to provide end‑to‑end safety (sequence numbers, CRCs, connection keys).
- Protocol elements:
- Safety PDU format and CRC for integrity (see Clause 7.1).
- Sequence number handling - changed in this edition from 2 octets to 4 octets (Clause 7.2.2) to align with final consortium protocol.
- Time synchronization details and monitoring added (Clause 7.2.4).
- Virtual header, connection key and cross‑check techniques for redundancy.
- Safety measures and constraints: Time stamps, time expectation, connection authentication, redundancy with cross‑checking, and guidance for residual error rate and SIL determination (Clause 5, Clause 9).
- System requirements: Safety function response time, device start‑up, message rates, and constraints for calculation of system characteristics (Clause 9; additions in 9.3 and 9.5 in this edition).
- Profiles and device architecture: FSCP 1/1 profile specifics, function block models, object dictionaries and configuration levels (Clauses 4–6).
- Assessment and conformance: Information to support safety assessment and manufacturer documentation requirements (Clause 10, Annex B).
Practical applications and users
- Where used: Process industries (oil & gas, chemical, power, pharmaceuticals), distributed safety instrumented systems (SIS), emergency shutdown and safety interlocks that require reliable, certified safety communication over fieldbus networks.
- Who uses this standard:
- Safety and control system engineers designing SIL-rated architectures.
- Device manufacturers implementing CPF 1 / FSCP 1/1 safety stacks.
- System integrators and OEMs responsible for configuration, testing and certification.
- Functional safety assessors and certification bodies evaluating compliance and residual error calculations.
