Overview
IEC 61947-1:2002 - Electronic projection: Measurement and documentation of key performance criteria - Part 1: Fixed resolution projectors.
This IEC standard defines how to measure and document key performance parameters for fixed-resolution projection systems in which the light source and projection optics are integral (for example, LCD panels, DMD, plasma, or electroluminescent matrix displays). It also applies to LCD and other fixed-resolution imaging devices used with overhead projectors. The standard focuses on measurement methods and conservative, repeatable performance specifications for the actual viewable image (particularly for computer-generated text and graphics), not on manufacturer design targets.
Key Topics
The standard specifies measurement and documentation practices for:
- Light output (luminance) and light output uniformity - how to measure and state projector brightness.
- Contrast ratio and small-area contrast metrics for alternating pixel lines.
- Fixed-resolution projector characteristics: active viewing area, aspect ratio, IEC resolution, response time, keystone correction, input-signal compatibility.
- Colour measurements and number of colours, including chromaticity and white-point (CCT) considerations.
- Viewing angle and screen gain specifications for devices with integral screens.
- Optical attributes: focus range, image size, optical distortion.
- Auxiliary characteristics: audio, light source life expectancy, maximum acoustical noise, power consumption, weight and dimensions.
- Measurement infrastructure and guidance: normative figures, pattern generator specs, sample specification, conversion equations, measurement error causes, photometer precision, and light-measuring device guidance.
- Annexes cover practical test resources (sample specifications, test patterns, photometric considerations and color gamut figure-of-merit).
Applications and Who Uses It
IEC 61947-1 is practical for:
- Projector manufacturers - to document product performance consistently.
- Test laboratories and QA teams - for repeatable measurement procedures and reporting.
- Procurement and specification writers - to compare projectors objectively for meeting display requirements (e.g., corporate, education, simulation, digital signage).
- System integrators and AV designers - to choose and validate projection systems for specific applications (text/graphics emphasis).
- Standards writers and researchers - as a reference for projector measurement best practices.
