IEC 61951-2:2017 specifies marking, designation, dimensions, tests and requirements for secondary sealed nickel-metal hydride small prismatic, cylindrical and button cells and batteries, suitable for use in any orientation, for portable applications. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of battery type; - addition of ‘F’ (high recovery type) designation for cells and batteries; - addition of ‘I’ (low self-discharge type) designation for cells; - revision of Figure 3 (6.1.3.1); - addition of “optional pip” note to positive contact; - changed leader line position from pip to flats of positive contact (B and G).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61951-2:2017 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for secondary sealed nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells and batteries. This standard covers marking, designation, dimensions, testing, and performance criteria for small prismatic, cylindrical, and button cells and batteries designed for portable applications and use in any orientation.
This fourth edition introduces significant updates, including new battery types, updated designation codes for high recovery and low self-discharge types, and revisions to technical illustrations and marking conventions. Adhering to this standard ensures interoperability, safety, and reliability of NiMH batteries in consumer and professional portable devices.

Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability:
- Applies to sealed nickel-metal hydride small prismatic, cylindrical, and button cells and batteries.
- Suitable for use in portable devices, regardless of orientation.
-
Cell and Battery Designation:
- Systematic alphanumeric codes indicate cell shape, discharge rate, special features (e.g., high recovery type "F", low self-discharge type "I"), and size.
- Example designations: HRLF (cylindrical high recovery, low-rate), HBFI (button cell, high recovery, low self-discharge).
-
Marking and Labeling:
- Clear labeling requirements for size, type, performance capability, and manufacturing information.
- Enhances traceability and safety in the supply chain.
-
Dimensional and Performance Requirements:
- Specifications for cell and battery dimensions ensure compatibility and interchangeability.
- Performance benchmarks include nominal voltage (usually 1.2 V per cell), capacity, endurance, overcharge tolerance, and internal resistance.
-
Testing Protocols:
- Prescribes methods for charge/discharge cycles, storage effects, mechanical strength, and environmental tolerance.
- Requirements for type approval and batch acceptance testing.
-
Safety and Reliability:
- Sealed design to prevent leakage and enhance operational safety.
- Testing and marking requirements designed to mitigate risks such as overcharge, thermal runaways, or mechanical failures.
-
Recent Updates:
- New high recovery (“F”) and low self-discharge (“I”) cell types.
- Revised drawings and improved marking for positive contacts.
Applications
IEC 61951-2:2017 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and quality assurance teams involved in the production and integration of NiMH batteries for portable devices. Practical applications include:
-
Consumer Electronics:
- Rechargeable batteries for cameras, audio devices, toys, and handheld gadgets.
-
Portable Industrial Equipment:
- Power tools, sensors, and testing devices requiring robust, standardized, and interchangeable NiMH cells.
-
Medical Devices:
- Portable units such as diagnostic equipment and battery-powered monitors.
-
Emergency Lighting and Backup Power Supplies:
- Ensures reliable standards for sealed battery packs used in safety-critical devices.
Using IEC 61951-2:2017 ensures product safety, regulatory compliance, and compatibility across a wide range of electronic applications, supporting the ongoing shift toward rechargeable, environmentally safer battery solutions.
